Teams have `fabulous time' in United Way's Amazing Race
Susan Hlindertmark
Whether it was digging through
cow patties to find a clue or running
up the stairs at the Goderich light-
house, participants in the second
United Way Amazing Race agree
they had a fabulous time.
"It was , awesome. I loved it," said
Kelly Hunt, of Dublin who was
thrilled to be a contestant this year
after serving as a volunteer during
the first race last year.
The event, a fundraiser for the
Huron United Way, raised about
$14,000 through pledges and a cor-
porate sponsorship from
ScotiaBank.
Entering with the aim not to be
the first team eliminated, Hunt and
her friend Jackie -MacArthur ended
up in sixth place and raised $620 for
the United Way.
While they were in the middle of
the pack for some time, Hunt says
they messed •up a clue about a
"frozen feline (Arctic Cat)" when
they went looking for an ice cream
shop instead of a snowmobile deal-
ership on Highway 4.
"We just didn't clue in until we
were almost in Lucan," she says.
However, some of the most fun she
had during the day was roping and
branding a calf at Turkey Run farm
near Brussels and singing Stompin'
Zbm songs at the Blyth Festival.
The day -long race, based on the
popular TV program, began at the
Goderich YMCA had contestants
drive to all corners of Huron, with
stops in Lucknow, Wingham,
Brussels, Blyth, Londesboro,
Winthrop, Seaforth, Clinton,
Hensall, Zurich, Exeter, Kirkton,
Crediton and Grand Bend.
Christa Bennett, of Egmondville,
who partnered with her friend
Susan McLachlan, of Kippen, said
their experience travelling through-
out Asia and Australia together
helped their challenge.
The challenge that "stuck out" for
Bennett was donning surgical gloves
and digging through fresh cow pat-
ties for film cannisters for clues.
"It was fresh and moist and there
were still cows in the pasture giving
us more samples. It was certainly
something I'd never done before,"
she laughed.
Julie and Gary Gagnier, of
Seaforth, are already thinking about
their strategy for next year and hav-
ing an "absolutely fabulous" time in
this year's Amazing Race.
"Everyone. was laughing at us
when we entered, saying you guys
are going to be divorced but it was
the total opposite. It was more fun
than anything we've ever done
together," said Julie.
While their legs were stiff the
next day .from all of the running,
Julie said they never got frustrated
during the race because the clues
kept them laughing.
"Your adrenaline is going - we
were pumped all day. And, you're
doing things you never in your
wildest dreams thought you'd be
doing," she said.
Despite getting lost early in the
race near Lucknow, the Gagniers
were among those leading the pack
until a mistake they couldn't recover
from at Vanastra.
When the Seaforth couple read a
clue about Front Road, they headed
for the bridge at Egmondville
instead of Vanastra and ended up
around ninth place.
"We just didn't know the Truscott
.story well enough," she said of their
misreading the clue.
Cherie Dolmage, of Egmondville,
and her sister Tracie Carter, of
Clinton, were the top collectors of
the day, raising $870.
Dolmage said among the new
experiences of calf roping and paint -
balling, beating their aunt and
uncle (the Gagniers) was a high-
light.
"It was really a fun day," she said.
Kim Payne, executive director of
Huron United Way, said plans are
already underway for the third
Huron Amazing Race, which will be
held in June 2007.
"Thirteen teams have already
signed up," she commented.
