Possible expansion of Seaforth sewage system
to be discussed at public meeting June 29
Susan Hu_ndertmark
411.1.01.111.
An update on Seaforth's water
system,including a possible expan-
sion to its sewage system to accom-
modate the new Bridges develop-
ment, will be discussed tomorrow
night (Thursday, June 29) at 7 p.m.
at a public meeting at town hall.
"It's a joint purpose meeting to
allow Seaforth to grow and the
Bridges development to grow," says
Kelly Vader, environmental planner
from B.M. Ross and Associates.
While the current- sewage system
is operating fine right now, Vader
says expansion may be necessary,
depending on how quickly the
Bridges development grows.
However, because the current
sewage system treats sewage better
than the provincial criteria, the cur-
rent system could be proven to be
able to handle the increased sewage
from the development.
"We may not need'an expansion at
all but we'd have to prove to the
ministry (Ministry of Environment)
that we can handle it," says Vader.
- Possible upgrades to the Seaforth
sewage system could include adding
another treatment stream or
upgrading the pumps at the pump -
house located at the Seaforth indus-
trial park.
While negotiations are still ongo-
ing with two landowners, progress
that's being made with the Seaforth
water system and two new wells
will also be discussed at the meet-
ing.
Huron East council has been look-
ing for another water source since
Seaforth's Chalk Street well was
closed in October of 2002 when
unacceptably high levels of radioac-
tive elements including radon, radi-
um and uranium were found in the
water.
A month later, the Ministry of the
Environment told Huron East that
Seaforth's only operating well - the
Welsh Street well - needs corrective
action because it is "under the
direct influence of surface water" or
a GUDI well.
Test wells near the existing Welsh
Street well on property owned by
Evelyn Querengesser .and on the
farm of Christa Eckert, north of
Seaforth were discovered to have
both the quantity and quality need-
ed for the town.
Vader says B.M. Ross is looking at
starting to design the system for the
two wells which it hopes to begin
construction on early in 2007 with
an anticipated completion in the fall
of 2007.
