Adults over 55 need help getting required nutrients Q: Why do adults over the age of 55 have difficulty fulfilling their vita- min requirements? How can they fulfill these requirements? Kim Arrey, a registered dietitian in Montreal, offers suggestions. A: As we get older our body becomes less efficient at absorbing and/or processing certain nutrients. Therefore, as we age, we need to make food choices that are as nutri- tious as possible. In addition, older individuals often consume less food, either to lose weight, or because their appetite has decreased. Although, our bodies require slight- ly fewer calories as we get older, it is NORTHSIDE UNITED CHURCH 54 Goderich St. W. Rev. In addition to consuming a well-balanced diet, many dietitians and geriatricians suggest that all individuals over the age of 55 take a multivitamin. Recent studies show that seniors who take multivitamins and/or min- eral supplements visit the doctor's office less often, and have fewer colds, flu etc. For these reasons, I recommend seniors take a well-bal- anced complete multivitamin spe- cially formulated for those aged 55 plus. - News Canada aide AT Cele!
