Huron Expositor, 2006-06-07, Page 3News Second radiothon fundraiser planned by hospital foundation Susan Hn-ndertmark Five dollars from each ticket sold for the last performance of the Blyth Festival's Another Season's Harvest will go towards the Seaforth Community Hospital Foundation as a kick-off for the hospital's second year in the CKNX Health Care Heroes Radiothon. Calling the kick-off a "Harvest for Health," Seaforth Local Advisory Committee (LAC) vice -chair Sheila Morton told the LAC on Wednesday that the foundation- has begun planning its radiothon fundraiser with the kick-off on Sept. 2. "The Blyth Festival really came on board," said Morton. "We chose that play because we live in a rural community that is exceptional- ly supportive and it's humorous but apropos. Morton told the LAC that after last fall's successful first attempt, the foundation decid- ed to try again and have already formed a committee and set a date of Saturday, Oct. 21 for the radiothon. "We decided we enjoyed the radiothon so much, we'll do it again. Our committee is small but we really work hard," she said. Stratford Festival actor Lucy Peacock has again been approached to be the honourary .chair of the event and Morton said her accep- tance "looks promising." After setting a goal of $25,000 last year, the Seaforth foundation made $42,279 during the radiothon. Once again, the Legion has been booked for the event and an entertainment program sim- ilar to last year's is being planned. "We will need twice the help we had last year so we're looking at a half day commit- ment from everyone in the LAC," she said. FHT business plan `quite solid, Seaforth LAC told Susan Hundertmark The business plan for a family health team (FHT) in Seaforth is "quite -solid" but might need to be revised at a provincial level, Seaforth .Community Hospital site adminis- trator Mary Cardinal told the hospital's Local Advisory Committee (LAC) last week. Cardinal was responding to questions from LAC member Tony Van Bakel about the local FHT plan. "A FHT is one of the biggest things Seaforth has had for a long time. Is Clinton going to steal the plan Seaforth worked so hard on?" he asked. "It was huge to have a family health team here," said Van Bakel. Cardinal, an alternate member of the FHT steering: committee, responded that the busi- ness plan enhances resources in both the Seaforth and Clinton areas but is organized in two components for the doctors from each area. She explained that Clinton's doctors operate under an "approved model" for provincial funding in a family health network but that Seaforth doctors have yet to decide on an approved funding model. "There are two parallel sites with one overarching governing body. The busi- ness plan is an evolution from the initial proposal," said Cardinal, adding that "Clinton's component does not diminish Seaforth's." The business plan for the FHT was submitted to the province last week.. Property -wide smoking ban gets medical staff support From Page 1 Seaforth's other Alliance repre- sentative Dick Burgess added later in the meeting that the medical staff "overwhelmingly support" the smoke-free policy. The policy, effective June' 1, was kicked off with a barbecue at each of the four Alliance hospitals the same day a new provincial law ban- ning smoking in enclosed work- places and public spaces came into effect. "The only thing smoking will be the meat," said Seaforth site admin- istrator Mary Cardinal of the barbe- cue. She said a banner at the main entrance proclaims the new policy and the Alliance has held inservice for staff and is providing informa- tion kits for patients on the new policy. "Our intent is not that we are making people quit smoking but that they can't smoke on hospital property," she said. Cardinal added that patients will be provided with nicotine patches and gum and staff will be supported if they want to quit smoking. "The people in acute care are not there very long so hopefully the patch and the gum will help them get through," she said.
