Outgoing Alliance board member
protests new hospital smoking ban

At least one protest has been lodged
against the Huron -Perth Healthcare
Alliance's new smoking ban on all of its
property at each of its four hospitals.
Outgoing Alliance board member Bob
Norris, who represented Seaforth, told
the Seaforth Local Advisory Committee
(LAC) on Wednesday that he wanted it
recorded in the minutes of his last
meeting that he opposes it.
"I am greatly distressed by it. I feel
it's overkill and I want it recorded at my
last meeting that I'm completely
against it," said Norris.
"We will now have patients with poles
out on the street and that's not right,"
he added.
The new Alliance policy bans smoking
in buildings and outside on all Alliance
property, including inside cars in the
parking lot.
Norris spoke of his grandfather who
lived until age 89 who smoked a pipe
every night of his life, saying the
Alliance should take into consideration
patients who aren't able or willing to
quit.
"If he (his grandfather) couldn't have
had his pipe, it would have killed him.
There has to be some leeway here," said
Norris.
LAC member Gord Rimmer agreed
with Norris, adding that mental health
patients should also be excltrded from
the ban.
"When they're in hospital, it's not the
time to say they can't smoke. There are
some exceptions," said Rimmer.
But, LAC member Tony Van Bakel
disagreed, pointing out that his father
died of lung cancer because of smoking
and added a hospital is the place {to set
the example.
"This is a hospital and it's the place to
start to knock off cigarettes," he said.
