Service_ Canada Centre in Goderich offering
summer employment opportunities to students
Jeff Heuchert
The Service Canada Centre for
Youth (SCCY) Goderich office is
open for business for another year
and is looking for students who are
interested in summer employment
opportunities within their commu-
nity.
SCCY will not just link both sec-
ondary and post -secondary students
with employers, they also provide
interview advice, resume building
and job search strategies and offer
job -posting to employers.
According to summer employment
officer at the Goderich office Tam
Pettigrew, their branch of the SCCY
works with students and employers
in areas from Goderich to Seaforth,
as far north as parts of Brussels and
Wingham and as far south as
Brucefield over to Bayfield.
"Last year we had 462 job vacan-
cies available in our area and in
Seaforth there was 34 positions
available," says Pettigrew.
Job openings are posted both on
the SCCY website and inside the
SCCY Goderich office.
Pettigrew explains that there is a
wide range of positions available to
students.
"Your options range from labour,
such as gardening or cutting grass,
to career making opportunities,
such as a research position - and
pretty much everything in between,
such as retail positions and ones
more common for teenagers," he
says. -
In addition, the SCCY will offer
what they call "odd jobs," that usu-
ally include jobs in the agriculture
industry such as baling hay or pick-
ing stones. These opportunities,
unlike more of the common ones,
can only last less than two weeks at
a time.
In addition to posting job opportu-
nities, the SCCY Goderich office will
be holding several information ses-
sions in the near future where they
will address many valuable skills to
help students when they're applying
for a job such as how to conduct a
job search and writing a good cover
letter and resume.
"I've contacted most of the area
elementary schools to see if their
senior classes are going to be inter-
ested again," says Pettigrew.
He adds that last year the
Goderich . and Exeter offices com-
bined helped over 650 students in
over 20 different information ses-
sions.
"This year were hoping to exceed
on those numbers. Especially now
that there's two of us," Pettigrew
says.
He adds that if any students
would prefer individual meetings
with a summer employment officer
they can do so as well.
"Last year we held 110 one-on-one
meetings to assist them with tips
when it comes to job search tech-
niques."
Employers interested in using the
SCCY to advertise a job opportunity
or for students looking for summer
employment, can contact the SCCY
