Seaforth tennis courts receive $9,000 facelift
Tennis instructor `tickled pink' by courts' new paint job and resurfacing
Susan Hundertmark
With just over $9,000 in repairs'
completed at the Seaforth tennis
courts on Chalk Street, tennis
instructor Hank Binnendyk is
expecting more interest in the sport
in town.
"I'm tickled pink. Everyone who
looks at it says it looks great," he
says.
Binnendyk attended council a
year ago to ask the municipality to
resurface the courts, predicting that
they would only be playable for one
more year without repairs.
With help from the Seaforth fire- :`r=
fighters, staff from the Seaforth
arena, a friend and his wife,;:-:,.
Binnendyk did most of the work
himself filling in cracks and resur-
facing and painting the courts.
The fire
department
helped by wash-
ing off the sur-
face during one
of its practice
nights and arena
staff helped seal
and paint the
surface.
"It took four
big days of
work," he says,
adding he had to
learn as he went
to use the
machine that
paints lines on
the court.
"It's exciting
to me. It took a
bit of arm twist-
ing but we got
the okay and I
really appreciate
the fact council
did this," says
Binnendyk.
While he's
happy with the
repairs,
Binnendyk says
he'd like to see
the fence painted
next - "maybe
that's a job for
next year," he

"The nets aren't too bad. I'd love
new nets but they're $300 apiece,"
he adds.

"This is a sport people can play
forever," he says.
Anyone wanting to use the tennis
courts must pay a $35 fee for the
season and will have $10 refunded
when they turn in the key in
November.
And, in case anyone tries to use
last year's key, it is changed every
year.
"People complain about the fee
but kids were destroying the courts.
We had to do something," says
Binnendyk.
