First- ever MedQUEST camp fills up quickly
High demand for week-long camp results in waiting list for students
Jeff Heuchert
Being the first year the
MedQUEST camp is being held in
Seaforth, this July, organizers were
hoping for a strong show of interest
from students, and they weren't dis-
appointed.
All of the positions available to
Grade 10 and 11 students from
Huron and Perth Counties were
quickly filled, according to Laura
Overholt, project manager with
Healthkick Huron, which is helping
organize the week-long camp.
"We've got 25 students that are
registered and ready to go. There is
also a short waiting list of four peo-
ple," says Overholt.
"We were very pleased with the
amount of applicants, especially
considering this is its first year in
Seaforth," she adds.
The MedQUEST camp will give
students realistic experience in
medical situations through simulat-
ed training, peer workshops and
watching medical professionals at
work.
As for what is next on the agen-
da, Overholt says "We're kind of at
the cusp right now," and that within
the next two weeks organizers will
be meeting to begin planning and
finalizing the camp's activities.
Much of waiting is due to the fact
that many of the medical students
who will help teach during the camp
are still finishing u p their schooling
for the year.
"As far as I know information
packages are being sent out this
week (May15.19) by - the
MedQUEST office in London that
includes medical information they
(the students) need to fill out and a
list of what materials they will need
'The medical
students
really excited.
They can't barely
for the camp," says Overholt.
Most of the camp's activities will
be held inside Seaforth Public
School, although students will visit
Goderich where a mock disaster is
being planned at the airport.
The camp,vwhich is organized by
the Schulich School of Medicine and
Dentistry, ran a pilot project last
summer in Sarnia that was
extremely successful.
As a result, this year the camp is
being offered in six locations,
including Seaforth July 10-14.
Overholt says there's still some
time to go before everything is orga-
nized but that it's not just the 25
students who are looking forward to
the camp.
"The medical students are really
excited. They can't barely wait."
