Two Seaforth natives have taken it
upon themselves to offer a hockey
camp this summer aimed at prepar-
ing players at the junior and AAA
levels. •
Graham Nesbitt and Mike Watt are
organizing the camp, which will
run through the week of July 17-21
and be held at the Maitland
Recreation Centre in Goderich.
Nesbitt says unlike the hockey
school he.and Dave McLlwain held
in Seaforth up until four years ago,
this camp is not geared towards
kids in the minor hockey system,
but towards getting the older play-
ers, age 13 and up, ready for their
respective camps.
He describes the style of training
they will receive as a "European pro
training, with a high tempo,
focused on high level of skill and
speed development."

Nesbitt adds that they will work
on developing players' thought
processes when they have the puck.
"It's about what to do with the
puck when you're travelling down
the ice through the opposing play-
ers," he says. "Having them think-
ing a few steps ahead."
Also unlike the old camp, which
consisted of off -ice activities such as
reviewing tapes, this will involve
solely on -ice training.
Nesbitt says they chose to run the
camp in July because it makes the
most sense in terms of everyone's
schedules.
Many of the coaches for the camp
have commitments with pro teams,
like Watt, a former NHLer who's
currently playing in Sweden, and
Nesbitt's son Derek, who's playing
in the East Coast Hockey League.
"The pro seasons are done in early
June, so they (the coaches) have a
couple of weeks .to relax and the
AAA and Juniors traditionally run
camps in early August," says
Nesbitt, as to why running the
camp in July makes the most sense.
"This will give them a head start
and get them going," he says. "It's
just another enhancement prior to
their camps."
Other coaches include former
NHLer Chris McAllister; Mike
Martin, who played in Germany last
year Shayne Tomlinson, who plays
in the United Hockey League and
Craig Ballantyne, a professional
strength and conditioning coach
from Toronto.
As for the camp being held in
Goderich, Nesbitt says because they
chose to run the camp in July, they
could not use the Seaforth arena
because the ice would not be in yet.
But, he adds, "that's where they
wanted to run the camp, because
it's home."
Nesbitt says running the camp in
Goderich also provides a great spot
for families to come fora week while
their kids participate in the camp.
He's expecting the camp will attract
players from across Huron and
Perth Counties.
"A lot t will commute, but hopefully
some will camp out, rent a cottage
or stay in a hotel. It will bring good
business to the community," he says.
"And this will be great advertising
fornext year."
Nesbitt says he is hoping to have
three age groups, with around 25
participants in each.
And although not too many have
signed up yet, Nesbitt expects a
rush of calls once schools finishes
for the summer, players get an idea
of when their hockey camps begin,
and families finish planning their
summer vacations.
Registration for the camp is $295
and you can do so by either contact-
ing Graham Nesbitt at 527-0712 or
