Woman pushing for deamalgamation of Hensall wants to represent village on council

A woman whose name is familiar
to many, but new to municipal gov-
ernment has entered
the Bluewater race for
Hensall councillor.
"I had thought about
it for a little bit," says
Kay Wise, adding her
decision was helped
along after reading a
statement from
incumbent Mayor Bill
Dowson saying he
would like to see the
ward system done
.away with.
She says it took a lot
of soul-searching for
her to come to the deci-
sion.
Wise is known for her work with
the Hensall Community
Development Action Committee,
working to better the village and
has chaired the Hensall Spring Fair
committee for three years.
She has been in the
news in the past year
for her part in the
Committee for the New
Village of Hensall, a
group working to dea-
malgamate from
Bluewater.
Wise now plans to
step down from the
committee.
Worried electing
councillors at large
"would only kick to the
curb what's left of
democracy," Wise says
there would be too much
of a .threat that representatives
could be concentrated in one area
and only serve the needs of some of
the municipality's communities.
'We need a
strong
representative
in Council to
endorse the
values of the
people here,'—
Kay Wise
She knows unless legislation
changes, Hensall is part of a larger
group and wants to give the village
a better voice.
"We need a strong representative
in council to endorse the values of
the people here," she says.
Wise, retired from Ontario civil
service work for various ministries
since 1997,.when she moved to
Hensall, says her experience work-
ing in senior management positions
with the Ontario government under
all three parties will be an asset.
"I think I have a good solid grip on
how the procedures work," says
Wise.
The Bluewater Municipal election
is off to an early start with over six
months to go before voting day, hav-
ing six candidates already in the
race for various positions as of
press time.
The Mayoral position has two
vying, as Bill Dowson joined new-
comer Janet Snider for a shot at a
third term.
Current Bayfield Coun. Dave
Johnston filed his nomination
papers for the position of deputy -
mayor and Tyler Hessel has once
again stated his intentions to run
for Bayfield council.
Stanley West Coun. George Irvin
is once again running for the posi-
tion as well as Bill MacDougall for
Hay West.
Another couple thousand fans
feel the same way J do
From Page 4
Jam fans are some of the most
devoted, and I guess I fit into that
group. Otherwise, I probably
wouldn't be too thrilled with this
sore throat of mine.

And it's also reassuring to know
there's another couple thousand
people feeling the same way today,
and we wouldn't want it any other
way.
Arena Expansion Fundraiser
Help us help them...
NR Renovations and The Siding People Inc. are donating 25 -cents for every linear foot of
eaves trough that is sold or installed for the months of May, June & July
to the Mitchell Arena Expansion Fund.
Perhaps it doesn't sound like much, but the average house uses 150-200 linear ft., rhic
could translate to a S40 -S50 donation per house directly to the expansion fund.
The goal is 2,000 -ft. per week for the 13 -weeks of this promotion, giving a total of
26,000 -ft. and perhaps an additional $6,500 to assist in the
arena dressing room fundraising initiative!
