Rural hospitals will have greater
opportunities under LHINs: Mitchell
Susan Hundert'mark
Rural hospitals will have
greater opportunities under
the new. Local Healthcare
Integration /Networks
(LHINs), says Huron -Bruce
MPP Carol Mitchell.
"The -rural areas are more
advanced than their urban
counterparts in integration,"
says Mitchell.
"I see opportunities arising.
Where it is appropriate, a
local hospital will be able to
provide service and why
shouldn't it go there? When I
look at smaller hospitals and
their total costs, can they do
it?" she says.
Mitchell says concern about
LHINs is expected but
unnecessary.
"A lot is the fear of the
unknown. Transition is diffi-
cult and healthcare is very
important in rural areas," she
says.
Mitchell says she "strongly
supports" LHINs because
they will guarantee access of

Huron -Bruce patients to ter-
tiary care in big city hospi-
tals.
And, while rural patients
already have access to ser-
vices in larger hospitals,
Mitchell says she's always
"cautious that the corridors
remain open."
Mitchell disputes claims
that the provincial govern-
ment has not been open about
its plans to create LHINs.
"We have been talking
about LHINs for some time. I
have given a lot of interviews
about LHINs," she says,
adding that there was a
meeting in Sehforth attended
by 50 chairs and CEOS of
health provider groups about
LHINs last Aug. 3.
Mitchell says she also
included a paragraph of infor-
mation about LHINs in her
recently -mailed householder
to constituents.
She says public consulta-
tion is mandatory for LHINs
but adds it hasn't been deter-
mined yet how the public will
be consulted.
"Public consultation is part
of their process - the public
must be engaged. And, their
meetings will be open to the
public," she says.
She disputes the argument
that LHINs are not local by
pointing out that decisions
would otherwise be made in
Queen's Park and adds they
will keep services closer to
home and reduce wait times.
To the charge that LHINs
will be able to close hospitals
without consulting the public,
Mitchell says any process
involving a- hospital closure
will have to go through the
provincial government, the
LHIN and a local hospital
board.
"Hospital boards are still in
place and anything like that
will be triggered there first. It
would have to go through a
public process. I don't see the
concerns being realized," she
says.
"At the end of the day, we
(the province) will be account-
able," says Mitchell.

Congratulations to David Carson Farms & Auction Services Ltd.
David & Brad Carson- Owners of a 65' x 140' Manure Storage Cover -All ---
"We now have three Cover -Alts and the buildings work very well because they provide an abundance of natural light. All of
our buildings are great in terms of clearance, but we especially enjoy the high clearance of the 65' building. The buildings
are very cost efficient and contribute significantly to the proficient operation of our business. We couldn't be happier with
the buildings or the service provided by the local Cover -All dealer." Brad Carson
