consultation to develop and execute
plans to protect their drinking
water sources," the release from
Mitchell said.
Source protection project manager
for Thames, Sydenham and Region
Source Water Protection Chris
Tasker, says this act is definitely a
step in the right direction.
"This act is very encouraging.
People are excited the government
has moved forward," he says.
The act is the next step in what
has been a series of programs and
initiatives over the past 50 years.
"Authorities have worked with the
province and other stakeholders,
including municipalities and the
farming community, to provide
expertise in developing the best
approach to source water protec-
tion," Tasker said in a press release.
In addition to the proposed act,
the provincial government recently
handed over $67.5 -million towards
scientific studies into the quantity
and quality of Ontario's water
sources.
Fifty -one -million dollars will go to
the municipalities to perform the
studies, while the remaining $16.5 -
million will go towards the conser-
vation authorities, towards staffing
and resources.
The goal of the studies is to high-
light the source water areas that
might be more vulnerable than oth-
ers.
Source protection project manager
for the Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority Cathie
Brawn, says the new act will be the
framework of improving coordina-
tion for protection activities.
"It (the act) has big potential to
raise awareness and make real
changes," she says.
