Call our newsroom at 527-0240 Hitmen prepare to represent province in Canadian Juvenile Broomball Championships for second consecutive year Jennifer Hubbard For the second consecutive year, the Central West Hitmen will be representing the province of Ontario at the Canadian Juvenile Broomball Championships. The juvenile boys' team - consisting of players aged 16-19 from the Blyth, Londesboro, Clinton, Seaforth, Mitchell, Staffa and Mildmay areas - claimed its spot at the April 5-8 nationals during a recent qualifying tour- nament near Barrie. Undefeated during the Nov. 25-26 tournament, the juveniles dominated play over the Windsor Devils, Embrun Icedogs and the Windsor Riot. "I was quite pleased with the way the boys played," said coach Rob Hunking. "They had their breakdown moments, but we went undefeated and had very few goals scored against us." The 2006 national competition will be hosted by Embrun at Carleton Place near Ottawa. "I'd like to win, but not knowing how the other provinces compare, it's hard to say how we'll do," Hunking commented. "We're a better team than we were last year though, so I'm hoping for at least top four." The Hitmen brought home' consolation silver medals and placed sixth overall in the 2005 national tourna- ment, which was held in Leduc, Alberta. With a "more even depth" throughout the team, Hunking said the juveniles are working together very well. Last year's national experience will also help to improve their performance. "They know what is going to be expected of them and they know the cali- bre of play they are going to face," he added. The Hitmen began their season with the Seaforth Men's Broomball League with a bang, holding the top spot for many weeks before dropping down to No. 2. "It's a good experience for the boys to play in the men's league," Hunking said. "Looking at the juvenile teams before we played in the men's league and comparing them to the teams now, the quality of play has definitely improved." 11 0 ■*li ■6 rialE L - GREAT FOOD F ' aat, 7 iesedl y £eauice with & Lois Anne Alenilugall #h - Go 52771346 Kevin Ryan of the the Denfield Cyclon Jennifer Hubbard photo Central West Hitmen blocks a shot during a regular season game Dec. 1 against es. And with nearly three months left in the' regular season and numerous tournaments, the Hitmen have plenty of time to prepare for the national tournament. - In February, the juveniles will face their provincial rivals again at the Ontario Junior Broomball Championships. Upcoming tournaments in Blyth and Seaforth will also help to develop skills. "We can always improve, but we'll probably be spending most of our time practising speciality teams - power plays and short-handed," Hunking said. The Seaforth-based team is hoping to pick up players from other Ontario teams to supplement its existing roster.
