Provincial funding improves diabetes education
Susan Hundertmark
The eight hospitals in
Huron and Perth counties
are receiving a total of
$124,459 in additional fund-
ing for diabetes
education from
the province.
With seven
per cent of the
population liv-
ing with dia-
betes, regional
coordinator
Barb Major-
McEwan says
9,200 people in
Huron -Perth
and 4,100 in
Huron have
diabetes.
"We put in for
additional fund-
ing for more educator time
because we saw we could
serve our population better
and it was very nice to hear
we'd received it," says
Major-McEwan.
The funding will allow an
extra third of a full-time
position in diabetes educa-
tion.
While a full-time diabetes
education program is
offered at Stratford General
Hospital, the other seven
hospitals throughout Huron
and Perth offer part-time
programs.
"We have waiting lists of
various lengths at our cen-
tres. It's well -
needed fund-
ing," she says.
"We're seeing
just under half
of the folks
with diabetes
right now
and this
funding
gives us a
little more
staff to see
more peo-
ple," says
Major-
McEwan.
She says
the numbers of people
with Type 2 diabetes is
on the increase because
of inactive lifestyles. As
well, those with the dis-
ease are also living
longer.
A press release from

Mitchell says patients in

benefit from the services of
new diabetes education and
care teams.
"These teams will ensure
that those with diabetes in
our area have the informa-
tion they need in their com-
munities to prevent dia-
betes -related complica-
tions," says Mitchell.
Diabetes education and
care teams will encourage
those with the disease to
take an active role in the
day-to-day management of
their own health care by
having regular medical
check-ups and controlling
their blood sugar and blood
pressure.
The teams will educate
patients on how to manage
their diets, check their
insulin levels and monitor
their overall health.
Effective chronic disease
prevention and manage-
ment will reduce wait times
and lower costs to the
health system, says the
press release. -
The province is investing
$15 million for the develop-
ment of the 69 new diabetes
education and care teams
across Ontario.
This year's $34 -million
investment represents an
increase of 79 per cent over
last year's funding, says the
press release.
