Seaforth junior curlers slide into new season
Jeff Heuchert
When these competitors hit the ice
they're not occupied with defeating
their opponents, but rather, having
fun and trying to stay on their feet.
They are the Seaforth junior
curlers, whose season began a few
weeks ago, and runs through April.
The club meets twice a week at
the Seaforth Curling Club,
Tuesdays for practice and
Wednesdays for games.
Connie Trotter, one of the junior
team coaches, says they focus teach-
ing curlers the necessary skills
required to succeed
"We teach them strategy," she
says, "the ability to think on their
feet."
Todd Doig, another junior coach,
says there are many reasons to con-
sider curling as an alternative activ-
ity.
The cost to join is $80, with the
equipment provided, so "it's not very
expensive," says Doig.
"It's a lot cheaper than hockey," he
adds. .
Doig says there are a number of
other reasons as to why you might
want to consider junior curling.
They never finish late at night,
they get to travel, and since
curling has become an
Olympic sport, they have
something to work towards,
he says.
The club has around 21
members currently, but still
have four to five openings,
says Doig.
He adds that their numbers
have remained fairly consis-
tent, as there's usually a
drop off with their older
members each year.
"The older kids are harder
to keep because they get jobs
and leave," he says.
The club welcomes anyone
between the ages of six and
18.
They will even accommo-
date those younger than six,
or anyone who cannot push
stones down the ice by allowing
them to curl half the distance and
by using special junior size stones.
Trotter says curling is a great way
for children to meet others, as it is a
very social sport.
"When you play you meet four new
people," she says, referring to the
number on each team.

stone down the ice inside the Seaforth
juniors for three years, and says
curling was an alternative for her
since, as she says, "I'm not too good
on skates."
"It's fun. You get to see your
friends and go to different places
and meet different people," says
Menary.
In fact, the junior curlers travel to
around five or six tournaments a
year.
In February they hope to send
some representatives to the Timbits
Provincial Championships in
Niagara Falls.
Last year at the provincials in
Haliburton Seaforth finished ninth
out of 54 teams, in only their first
year.
Although Trotter hopes the junior
curlers do well and improve on their
abilities, she says there are more
important things.
"We teach them to have fun, we
don't stress that they have to win,'
she says.
