Chamber of Commerce prepares for inaugural meeting
Huron East Chamber of Commerce hopes to increase membership from current 70
Susan Hundertmark
While it's been two years
since the idea of a Chamber
of Commerce for Huron East
was first pursued, an inau-
gural meeting will be held
in February.
"We went for incorpora-
tion and received that in
late May, we chose our exec-
utive and we're now ready
for a general meeting," says
Huron East economic devel-
opment officer Ralph
Laviolette.
With an executive
made up of president
Bob Fisher, vice presi-
dent Dick Burgess,
treasurer Dene Coombs
and acting secretary
Ralph Laviolette, the
Huron East chamber
has between 60 and 70
members so far.
Other members of the
executive include Tom
Williscraft, Tim Prior,
Lin Sterner, Charlie
Hoy, Chris Ten Pas and
Cathrine Campbell.
Laviolette has con-
tracted the services of
Linda Finkbeiner to
visit businesses
throughout Huron East
over the winter to
inform them about the
benefits of joining the
chamber and recruit
new members.
With incorporation
came a number of cost-
saving features that are
offered to members,
including a discount on
Bell Mobility services,
discounts on Visa,
Mastercard and Debit
card rates, discounts on
PetroCan and Esso
products, discounts on
hotel rates, a discount
on bookkeeping services
and group health, med-
ical and dental insur-
ance.
"People who are
familiar with chambers
know there are savings
to be had. For a two -
person business, the
benefits could total up
to $200 to $300 a year,
says Laviolette.
He adds that mem-
bership fees will be
increasing from $1 to
$50 a year in January
because of the cost-sav-
ing programs the cham-
ber is now offering.
And, he says the
chamber will continue to
look for more group sav-
ings in areas such as
computer repair, office
supplies'and catering.
While the chamber is
set up to represent busi-
nesses in Huron East,
Laviolette says associate,
memberships will be
accepted from businesses
located outside the munici-
pality if they do business in
the area.
Fisher points out that a

`chamber of commerce in
Huron East will not be com-
peting with the Business
Improvement Area (BIA) in
Seaforth or the Business
Group in Brussels.
"The BIA focuses on the
downtown core and it
has a strict mandate.
The chamber will be
broader and benefit the
whole community," says
Finkbeiner.
"It's a nice way to
knit the community
together. The chamber
has a lot of benefits that are
really worthwhile," adds
Laviolette.
Fisher says the chamber
is currently looking into
offering an annual awards
night to recognize business-
es' financial success and
their community involve-
ment.
Another project involves
creating a resource List so
that members can share
supplies, such as tables or
parade barricades.
The inaugural meeting on
Feb. 4 at the Seaforth arena
will include a business expo
at 3 p.m. and a dinner at 7
p.m.
