Lions Park damage makes council question skate park
Susan H u n d e r t m a r k
Several thousands of dol-
lars in damage to Lions
Park from skateboarding
raised questions at Huron
East council last Tuesday of
whether or not Seaforth's
skate park is serving its
purpose
wooden flaps, built in the
late 1960s have a unique
hinging system that is not
easily replaced.
"They were kicked or
ripped right off," he said,
adding that most of the
damage has happened dur-
ing the fall.
As well, a stage in the

McLachlan told
council that
Seaforth Lions
member Bob
Beuttenmiller
had alerted him
to damage at
Lions Park.
Broken picnic
tables and
extensive dam-
age to the picnic
pavillion, where
wooden flaps on
the windows were removed
and used as ramps, have
been caused by skateboard-
ing, said Beuttenmiller dur-
• ing a phone interview after
the council meeting.
"Since council has built a
park, not everyone is going
up there. We (the Lions) put
a lot of money into the park
to keep it in top shape and
this doesn't help. I just
thought council should
know about it," he said.
Beuttenmiller said the

pretty
good."
He said
he's also
had to ask
skate-
boarders
not to use
the wading
pool to
practise
their
jumps.
"If I'm
around, I'll
tell them no skateboard-
ing and they just pick up
their boards and leave,"
he said.
Huron East councillors
questioned if the skate
park in the arena park-
ing lot was doing what it
was supposed to.
"I still see half a dozen
(skateboarders) on the
street every night. They
don't want to be at the
north end of town. I've

seen maybe four kids at the
arena," said Tuckersmith
Coun. Larry McGrath.
Seaforth Coun. Joe
Steffler said it was no won-
der kids don't want to skate-
board at the arena because
the equipment is not that
great.
"I've never seen a skate
park with a chainlink fence.
It looks like a prison: If you
treat kids like criminals,
that's what you get," he
said.
Deputy -Mayor Bernie
MacLellan reminded
Steffler that the fence was
required by the arena board.
"It was requested because
it's still a parking lot. There
was no other option at the
time," added McGrath.
Steffler responded that
most skate parks are in
parks, not parking lots but
McKillop Coun. Sharon
McClure challenged him to
name another possible loca-
tion.
"There was no other place
to put it so I don't know
what you do now," she said.
