Let's make
sur
volunteers
The backbone of almost any event or organization
in Seaforth - as in any small town - from dances to
church bazaars to sports, is the local volunteer.
Countless parents have stepped forward over the
years to ensure there are teams and sporting
leagues that give our kids- a chance to remain phys-
ically active and teach them persistence, courage,
sportsmanship, fair play and many other positive
attributes.
And, -as many citizens, young and old, have given
their .time to raise funds for community projects
that have contributed to the health, prosperity and
just plain fun of the community.
That's why for more than 20 years, the communi-
ty has been honouring three special citizens of the
year, in the categories of civic service, humanitari-
an service and service to sports. •
So, when one of the three categories does not
receive any nominees and consequently, does not
recognize a winner, it's a cause for concern.
This year, for the first time since the awards pro-
gram began in the early 1980s, a service to sports
award winner was not named.
In a sports town like Seaforth, that's a little hard
to believe.
Do we no longer appreciate the extra -curricular
hours our volunteers spend at the arena or on the
ball diamond? Or do organizers need to do a better
job stressing the importance of the awards, encow-
aging townspeople to take the time to sit down and
write a few letters of nomination?
' Huron East Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan
shares our concernand has already filed a report
with council, asking for a closer look at the citizen-
ship award program and how it might be better
promoted.
He says the issue should be discussed at an
upcoming meeting.
Without our volunteers, Seaforth won't have a
heck of a lot to offer. Let's give them the recognition
they deserve.

Trip to United States helps me
appreciate being Canadian
As my friends and I
approached the inspection
booth at the Peace Bridge
border crossing, on our
way to Buffalo to watch a
NFL game two Sundays
ago, we all joked about the
things we definitely
should not say to the
inspection officer when it
was our turn.
As our car rolled up we were all asked to
show our driver's licenses, and, after long
deliberation, the officer decided we weren't
going to pose a national threat, and we were
on our way through.
Through into beautiful America, with its
towering skyscrapers and historical land-
marks, or, just a strip of very poorly -paved
roads and a bunch of billboards for personal
insurance lawyers.
It makes me think we should all be very
grateful to live where the government has
money to spend on damaged roads, because
it's not being spent on strengthening an army,
or that if you're just clumsy, or incompetent,
you can't sue an innocent company or individ-
ual for thousands of dollars.
For all the hassle you usually have to go
through just to enter the US, you'd think they
would welcome us with a little bit more.

The truth is, they don't
have anything better to
offer us.
After travelling down
Interstate 90 for a short
time, you can look off to
the side and see rows of
streets, filled with run-
down, burnt-out buildings,
maybe the most truthful
representation of what most US citizens live
in.
Sure we had a great time at the game, even
bought some cheap beer at the grocery store
before we came home, but that's about as far
as my love .towards the US goes.
If I ever have even the slightest inclination
of ungratefulness towards where I live, a trip
to and from the US will cure me for quite
some time.
It may sound corny, but it feels good to drive
on a smooth highway, not have to hear about
the worker who stubbed their toe at work and
sued the company for thousands of dollars,
and be able to pay for beer, at a beer store,
with multi -coloured money.
I'm proud to be Canadian. I guess some-
times it just takes a little America, for me to
remember how lucky we are.
