Seaforth photographer helps create billboard promoting women's safety For Seaforth-area photographer Flo Dyck, creating a billboard promoting the safety of Huron County women and children was a labour of love. "I've been involved in wife abuse issues for years but the safety of women and the safety of children are intertwined. We don't often think about it but it's very simple," she says. Unveiled Monday, the billboard shows the faces of 10 community leaders representing medical and emergency services on top of a panoramic view of Huron County farmland. Overlooking the fields are a woman and her three children, all in silhouette. The local campaign, created to recognize Woman Abuse Awareness Month in November, involves the billboard being dis- played in Goderich, Clinton and Dashwood, along with pamphlets and posters being dis- tributed to doctors' offices throughout the county. "The goal of this campaign is to reach out to Huron County residents, reminding them that the problem of woman and family abuse exists in their neighbourhoods, that help is available and that together we as a communi- ty continue to work on addressing these issues," says Jane Falconer, executive director of the Huron County Child Abuse Prevention Committee in a press release. Dyck donated her time to the project while the expenses were paid by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, Early Years Program Branch, the Women's Shelter, Second Stage Housing and Counselling Services of Huron. Alexandra Beasse, of the Huron County Child Abuse Prevention Committee, says organizers are impressed with the way Dyck interpreted their vision. "She took a slogan and a vague idea of ours and made it happen. The first draft of the image was exactly what we wanted. It's such a beautiful product," she says. "It's a huge gift to us and very reflective of Huron County values," she says. Dyck says she was very excited to see the billboard go up Monday. "It was awesome to see it full size," she says. During the 10 -month project, Dyck pho- tographed 10 members of the Huron County community who represent the professionals whose work helps to keep local women and children safe. "They wanted to use the actual people involved, the faces on the frontline telling the community they have a plan to protect women and children. It's an upbeat and positive mes- sage about making change," she says. But, perhaps the most time-consuming task was finding the right landscape for the panoramic view of local farmland. "I drove around for three or four weeks look- ing for the right place. There are lots of pretty places in Huron County," she says. Dyck says she was hoping to show the fami- ly's vulnerability and isolation along with the professionals ready to help them. "This is a rural area and we need to help each other because we're few in number," she says. • Residential • Commercial • Agricultural FREE QUOTES Myron Gascho Phone 519.655.3100 www.mtsgaragetiours.com Fax 519-655-9954 95 Hope St. W., Tavistock, Ont.
