Up until then the age requirement for firefight- ers was 18, which is still the age when fighters began earning a pay. The three discussed the idea with their fathers. Luckily, Nic's father is the fire chief for Hensall, Devon's is the deputy chief, and Nathan's is a firefighter with the department. Each went through an orientation that consist- ed of learning the fire hall, safety on the scene, and fire science, among other things, says Bruxer. Following the training, the three, all stu- dents at St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School, were "directly under chief's orders, just like anybody else," says Bruxer. They are fully trained and qual- ified to use all of the equipment, including the air tanks, says Long. The Hensall Fire Department answers Community Calendar WED. NOV. 2 SUN.
