Local talent to perform in Stratford
production of South Pacific this November
Jeff Heuchert
There will be some familiar faces
in Stratford Community Player's
production of South Pacific this
November.
Seaforth residents, Casey Van
Bakel, and Todd Chisholm, along
with his son and daughter, will be
performing in the play, based on the
film of the same name.
"The music is wonderful," says
Van Bakel about the play, in which
he stars in the lead role.
He plays Emile DeBeque, a
French planter during the second

There is also a love story between

Over his year away, Van Bakel
kept in touch with organizers,
which is where he heard and
became interested in South Pacific.
Van Bakel has an extensive back-
ground in performing, and therefore
isn't concerned about stage fright.
Although his role includes singing,
dancing and acting, he says he's

most comfortable singing, which
he's done lots of in the Blyth
Festival.
"My acting is doubtful," Van Bakel
says jokingly.
He adds, "My dancing leaves
something to be desired."
Chisholm, a teacher at St. James
School, feels much of the same
about his own skills.
"I got a dramatic role," says
Chisholm. "No dancing, no singing."
He plays commander Harbison,
who is second in command oversee-
ing the sailors on the island.
"This is something outside the
box, that's a challenge, a risk," he
says with excitement.
Chisholm looks at the play as an
opportunity to bond with his chil-
dren as well.

He was asked
if he'd like to
participate with
his children by
Jennifer Zutt,
the former music
teacher at St.
James School,
who is the music
director for the
play.
Chisholm
says he asked his kids expecting
them to not be interested.
"I know my kids are shy, so I
thought they would say no, but they
surprised me," he says.
Chisholm has no previous experi-
ence, but says "teaching 15 years is
like being on stage everyday," as to
why he's not too nervous.
Chisholm's 12 -year-old daughter
Danielle plays the assistant to
bloody Mary, a native trader on the
island.
She says she is not nervous at all.
"I love to act, I love drama and
trying something new," she says.
As for 10 -year-old Jeremy
Chisholm, who will play the role of
DeBeque's son, like his father says
he's excited to be trying something
new, which is evident when he says
he's already memorized his lines.
The play will be performed inside
Stratford's City Hall.
"It's a cozy little atmosphere,' says
Van Bakel. "It's not a big hall."
Performances for South Pacific
will be on Nov. 17, 19, 23, 24, and
26, at 8 p.m., and Sunday Nov. 20 at
2 p.m.
Tickets are $15, and can be pur-
chased at Sinclair Pharmacy on
Wellington Street in Stratford.
