Huron -Bruce MP visits CHSS and
answers students questions on issues
from health care to same-sex marriage
Jennifer Hubbard
Central Huron Secondary School
students learned the ins and outs of
the federal government recently
when Huron -Bruce MP Paul Steckle
stopped in for a visit.
After a quick lesson on life as a
member of parliament, the students
— from Grade 10, 11 and 12 civics
and law classes — put Steckle on the
spot with questions on a range of
topics including health care, money,
gun control and Sea King heli-
copters.
Kyle Robinson tackled the ongoing
battle between rural and urban, by
asking Steckle for his opinion on
development, while Nathan Wilson
wondered what ever happened to
"temporary" GST.
"When rural communities do well,
so do urban," Steckle commented.
"It's a right hand and left hand
working together. You can't have
one without the other."
As for GST, Steckle said the tax
replaced a previously hidden 12 per
cent tax and is a good moneymaker
for the country.
"It's there and it's probably going
to be there until we have our debt
retired," he said.
Organized by teacher John
Drummond, the Oct. 13 presenta-
tion was the second part of an
assignment that will see students
compare Steckle's representation of
his constituents to Huron -Bruce
MPP Carol Mitchell's representa-
tion.
Mitchell visited the school on Oct. 7.
Responding to a number of hard-
hitting questions, Steckle said he
believes "the Liberal government
has managed the country well for
the last 12 years."
"Our country is in great shape," he
added.
Rosalyn McFarlan took on the
same-sex marriage controversy,
looking for an explanation of
Steckle's adamant opposition.
"You've said before that you
respect people in their decision to
have a gay relationship, but why
don't you respect their desire to be
married?" she asked.
Based on his own Christian beliefs
and the beliefs of a number of other
world religions, Steckle said he dis-
agrees with same-sex marriages, as
does the majority of his con-
stituents.
Citing a recent
Huron -Bruce
household poll, of
which 11 per
cent were
returned, 85 per
cent of the
respondents said
marriage should
be between a
man and a
woman, Steckle
said.
"There's a lin-
eage there. If we
take marriage
and allow it to
become same -

sex, that lineage stops. The family
tree is cut off and all we have left is
a stump," he said.
Looking back on his years in both
municipal and federal politics,
Steckle encouraged the students to
continue to strive for their. dreams.
"If you've got something you're
dreaming now,
don't expect that
dream to be real-
ized immediate-
ly," he said.
"Don't give up
on your dreams.
Be the best at
what you want to
do and if it takes
a turn, go some-
where else and
be a success
there too."
