First draft of strategic plan for Huron East
is meant to help community plan future
The first draft of a
strategic plan for
Huron East, presented
recently to municipal
council, is meant to
encourage the commu-
nity to come together
and plan its future,
said economic develop-
ment officer Ralph
Laviolette.
"We need to know
where we're going as a
community. We have
amalgamation behind
us - we now need to fig-
ure out where we want
to be in five to 10
years," he said.
The first draft of the
strategic plan, the
result of a five-hour
session of the economic
development commit-
tee, looks at both good
and bad features of the
municipality, issues of
infrastructure, down-
town development,
health and wellness,
seniors, youth, visitors,
manufacturing, com-
mercial and retail
devektpment, agricul-
ture and the environ-
ment.
"The economic devel-
d'pment committee has
reached the stage in its
efforts and evolution
that it requires a
framework for the
future growth of Huron
East as a growing and
sustainable municipal-
ity," says the draft.
To the good, the
report focusses on the
Bridges project, a
small boom in single
family housing in
Seaforth, • recent
healthcare initiatives
improving services at
the hospital and clinic,
windpower testing
underway in McKillop,
streetscapes in
Seaforth and Brussels
noted by visitors to the
area and strong service
clubs.
To the bad, the
report points out no

oped land in Seaforth
or Brussels, a lack of
public education about
community growth and
improvement, and a
council that's in main-
tenance mode.
Under infrastruc-
ture, the report says
misconceptions about
Seaforth's drinking
water need to be dis-
pelled.
As well, it says
efforts must continue
to entice high-spped
internet capability and
improved cellphone
service to the area.
Downtown issues
include a set of busi-
ness appearance stan-
dards, more group
marketing, solutions to
parking problems and
consistent signage.
As well, the report
points to the need for a
funding proposal
writer for culture and
heritage proposals and
a retail marketer for
the downtowns of
Seaforth and Brussels.
Other issues include
the need for centres for
seniors and youth and
more visitor attrac-
tions.
Laviolette says he
hopes to hold some
more public meetings
to create task groups to
continue moving for-
ward with strategic
planning. No dates
have yet been set for
the meetings.
