Huron Expositor, 2005-09-14, Page 9News Huron East councillor upset gas wasted on 28 -kilometre detour By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor Close to $80,000 was spent in gas by Huron East drivers using a 28 -kilometre detour off of County Road 12 in Grey this summer, estimated Grey Coun. Mark Beaven. And, he was burning mad about that fact at last Tuesday's Huron East council meeting. "Is someone at the county that incompetent to do that? It should have been a one -block detour but instead it was 15-20 blocks. I could not believe it," he said. The detour was created for culvert work done for five days on County Road 12 between Highway 86 and Jamestown. Beaven said the detour went from the Diesel Car Diner on Highway 86 to Molesworth, to Ethel and back to County Road 12. "I know the county has to pay the municipality for regrading the road if they detour. onto a municipal road. But, rather than spend the $500 to $1,000 it would take to replace some gravel, they had the users spend $80,000 for gas," he said. Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan pointed out that the county's job is to watch out for its own budget. But, Beaven disagreed. "There's one taxpayer whether it comes out of the county budget or the taxpayers' pocket. It was idiotic and inexcusable and should be brought up at the county (council)," he said. "It was a bone -head decision," agreed Mayor Joe Seili. Beaven warned Seaforth councillors to watch that the county make a better decision about any detours necessary for road work coming up this fall on Main Street North from Goderich Street to Cherryhill Road when storm water upgrades are completed. Eviction notice for Epilepsy Huron reversed by county council for now By Mark Nonkes Goderich Signal -Star One of Huron County's charitable organizations will get to stay put despite being served an eviction notice in June by Huron County staff. Epilepsy Huron -Perth -Bruce will continue working from the county -owned Jacob Memorial Building, just south of Clinton, while county employees who were slated for that space will have to look elsewhere. The organization, which was served with a 90 -day eviction notice by county staff, appealed the decision at the Aug. 9 committee of the whole meeting. Caroline Simons, executive director of Epilepsy Huron - Perth -Bruce; told county council she understood the organization had a five-year lease of the current space. At the meeting, a recorded vote was called and a 10 to 6 decision rescinded the eviction notice. However, at the Sept. 1 county council meeting, South Huron Coun. Dave Urlin said the lease was for one year with four one-year lease options attached to it. "I don't think we're in the business of providing room for charities," said Central Huron Coun. John Bezaire. "I don't mean to be the mean guy here," said South Huron Councillor Rob Morley, "But we've spent weeks and weeks on our budget." This move, Morley added, means the county has to come up with additional money to find a spot for the county staff who will not be able to work in that location. However, Goderich Coun. Deb Shewfelt said he voted in favour of letting the organization stay this year because staff took a decision into their hands that wasn't theirs to make. "We're missing the point," he said. "It's up to council to give notice." Bluewater Coun. Paul Kloop agreed "it should have come to council." In an approved motion, council agreed again to let Epilepsy Huron -Perth -Bruce stay in the location for the time being, despite the objections. The move means new locations will have to be found for the ambulance service administrator, the 911 co-ordinator and other ambulance managers. Cardno's Men's Wear closing in new year after 12 years on Main Street By Jeff Heuchert Expositor Staff They've been at 39 Main St. in Seaforth for the past 12 years, but Cardno's Men's Wear will be closing, shortly into the new year. The decision comes after a series of occurrences drastically affected the number of customers coming into the store. Owner Liz Cardno says it's just not working anymore. "The last three years have been a downhill slide," she says. Cardno's Men's Wear opened in September 1993. Cardno herself has worked on Main Street for 40 years. Trouble began for the store back in 1998 when they suffered their first robbery. In 2000 they were robbed of $15,000 worth of merchandise. Cardno admits she should have probably closed the store after the second robbery. "It took the wind out of my sails," she says. The next blow was dealt in 2002, when the Seaforth District High School closed. She says the school provided a steady flow of students. But she adds since then the number of shoppers has been "getting less and less." Cardno also contributes the store closing to the closing of the Canada -U.S. border to beef farmers as well. She says many of the farmers who used to shop at her store were not making enough money to purchase clothes. Cardno understands that "clothing was the last thing they wanted to buy." For the time being Cardno's Men's Wear will continue welcoming customers. In fact, Cardno says this is a great time to come in to her store. All their fall stock is in, and prices will continue to drop as Susan Hundertmark photo New road grader Huron East recently received a new road grader it purchased in June for $289,685 from Volvo in Goderich after receiving three tenders.
