Seaforth's 35 former ambassadors
to be celebrated during this year's fair
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
The first queen of the fair
in Seaforth remembers being
crowned in 1971 by Miss
Dominion of Canada.
"She came to Seaforth to
launch the competition and it
was a very big deal. It was a
great opportunity and I felt
very proud and pleased to be
a part of it," says Jane
Muegge, of Clinton.
Muegge is one of the
former fair queens and
ambassadors being invited to
come back to the Seaforth fall
fair as the 35th anniversary of
the contest is recognized at
the town's 160th agricultural
fair.
While Muegge is unable to
attend the festivities this year,
she vividly remembers
getting her first chance at age
17 to drive a large tractor
down Main Street during the
parade with her sponsor,
MarlenVincent.
"I'd only driven a garden
tractor before that and it had a
cab and the whole bit. It was
a lot of fun," she says.
Cathy O'Reilly, of
Egmondville, who won the
competition in 1977, says she
was asked to represent the
Lions Club at the fair the year
she was 19 and working as a
lifeguard at Lions Pool.
"I was always a gregarious
kind of person but the
experience was very
confidence -building. There
were about 10 of us
competing that year and I
remember it being very fun
and social as we sat together
laughing," says O'Reilly, the
winner of that year's Miss
Congeniality award as well.
She says she remembers
the experience warmly since
all of the contestants were
treated like queens.
And, she says the
opportunity to compete at
public speaking, especially at
the provincial level at the
Canadian National Exhibition
in Toronto, helped build her
social skills and comfort at
talking to large groups,
something she does a lot in
her current career as a nursing
home inspector for the
Ministry of Health.
"Being in Toronto was a
little overwhelming because it
was my first time in
downtown Toronto by myself.
Cathy O'Reilly
in 1977
It was a very serious
competition, a different
Flavour altogether from the
Seaforth fair," she
remembers.
"I saw it as a bit of an
adventure but it turned out to
be a great time."
For Marg Henderson, who
won the competition in 1973,
the experience became a bit
of a family tradition last year
when her niece Ashley
Marion won.
"I always enjoy going to
the fair and to the ambassador
competition because I was a
part of it. I've kept my old
sash and tiara even if they are
a bit tacky compared to the
ones they get now," she says.
Henderson remembers her
year as queen of the fair very
exciting as she represented
the Queens Hotel and its
owners Jim and Joan
Parkinson.
And, the following year,
she ended up winning the
Miss Centennial competition
when Seaforth celebrated its
centennial year.
Sandra Hunt, of Brussels,
remembers the year she won
the competition in 1985 as a
time of realizing how
important it is to contribute to
your own community.
"It really helped me
develop an idea of what I
want my community to be.
Here were all these other girls
representing areas around
Ontario (at the CNE
competition) and putting stuff
into their communities and it
was contagious," she says.
Hunt still helps out with the
sheep competition at the fair
along with her father.
"It's something I always
look forward to. And, it's a
time I spend just with my
Marg Henderson
in 1973
dad," she says.
At 19, Hunt had just begun
attending Fanshawe College
and• came home on a
sweltering night to compete
for ambassador of the fair.
"I didn't have a thing to
wear because all my summer
clothes were packed away in
London so I ended up
wearing my grandmother's
dress. People said they loved
my outfit," she laughs.
During her year, two boys
also ran for the ambassador
title, something Hunt says
added a lot to the experience.
"They really helped to get
rid of the beauty queen
stereotype that year. It would
be a better competition if
more men were in it," she
says.
However, Hunt says it's
still unlikely that many young
men are asked to compete by
the sponsors.
"You don't get an
opportunity to do it unless
you're asked," she says.
Hunt says the public
speaking and interviewing
skills she gained were
priceless when she entered
the work world.
Shelley Pryce, who won the
title in 1992. says she
remembers competing against
a large group of 16-17
contestants.
She remembers speaking
about the importance of
getting involved in the
community.
"I talked about the people
who make a difference and
what an awful place Seaforth
would be if people didn't get
involved," she says.
Pryce says she was very
surprised to dein and enjoyed
the support of friends and
family.
Shelley Pryce
in 1992
"You'd have thought I'd
won the Miss Universe
contest," she laughs.
She says it was an exciting
time and that she still has
friends she made at the CNE
competition.
