JUNE 22, 2005 Ncw'S St. Anne's kids send anti -bullying message By Jennifer Hubbard Clinton News -Record Staff A group of St. Anne's Secondary School students has wrapped up its tour of local elementary schools as it worked to promote an anti - bullying message in a unique way. Drama teacher Crystal Brennan said the pilot project, which saw the Grade 11 drama class write its own play, is just the "beginning of something much bigger." "It's a really good message. Not only do we get to have fun doing a play, but we also get to promote a message of anti -bullying and help someone," Eric Finlayson said. Starting off as a suggestion from Huron Perth Catholic District School Board director of education Larry Langan, the project soon took on a life of its own as students incorporated their We bring you LOCAL news like nobody else. All three students are members of Crystal Brennan's Grade 11 drama class that toured area elementary schools earlier this month with their self written anti -bullying play. own experiences. The play features skits depicting bullying in the classroom, on the bus, on the playground, at home and even offers insight into the reasons why children resort to bullying as a way of getting attention. "It's not all about the stereotypical bully because we wanted to get a message across that people could relate to," Jaime Price explained. "It's what happened when we were little... what we saw and what goes on now." "It's not just physical bullying, but emotional bullying as well," Sarah Cooper added. "It happens all of the time. Even adults get bullied." But it wasn't an easy process. Students found themselves revising their script continuously in an attempt not to sound "preachy." "We know how it feels when people preach to us and you start to tune them out," Cooper said. RgliQVATION ANIS CIALISTS!", COMPACT DESIGN Plan H 1-1-596 MAIN FLOOR PLAN 1692 SQ. FT. Brennan commended her class on its success in finding a variety of interventions when it comes to bullying, including parent, teacher, peer and sibling. "Friends who want to make a difference have the power to do so," she commented. "If a peer intervenes in bullying, it usually stops within 10 seconds. That's why we wanted to put the power back into the hands of the students." Following a dress rehearsal presentation at St. Anne's last Thursday, the class toured Precious Blood, St. Boniface, St. Mary's, St. James and Si Joseph's schools. Brennan said the project was a perfect fit for the Grade 11 class, because of its focus on children's theatre. It is just one of the Safe Schools Initiatives organized by the Catholic board. And while she's still waiting for feedback, Brennan said the project will definitely continue next year. One school has already requested the script and song so that its Grade 8 class could do their own performance of the play. NSE SpGh GREENHOUSE • Annuals • Bedding Plants • Patio Pots • Hanging Baskets • Perennials • Professional Landscape Designer Hanging Baskets Buy 1 Get 1 at 1/2 Oft Annuals Buy 2 Got 1 PRIM OPen Thurs. 1 pm -8 pm Fri. & Sat. 9 am -spm or by appointment Bert & Carol Reinink dt family - 43079 HuAett fticKiNop Rd. 4 km.
