Helen VanBakel, of Seaforth, a teacher at St. Anne's Secondary School in Clinton, won the award for her involvement in various projects demonstrating "faith in action." VanBakel has been involved in numerous programs and retreats such as Marriage Preparation, COR weekends, and the RCIA. She started the Sunday Friends program at her parish and was also the area coordinator for World Youth Day. As liaison with the Stratford and District Right to Life, VanBakel promotes the organization's poster contest and displays, participates in the Life Chain and organizes youth trips to Ottawa to increase students' awareness for this cause. VanBakel continually encourages her students to care for the poor and hungry by their participation in the annual "Fastathon." Maureen Lang, of Dublin, an educational assistant at St. Aloysius School in Stratford was also recognized with an award. Lang, "a kind, caring and giving individual who will take care of everyone else before herself," was recognized because of her love of children and her strong faith despite many personal hardships. Lang is a eucharistic minister at her church and visits shut-ins and nursing homes. "Maureen is an inspiring role model for her own children and the students she works with," says a press release from the school board. Julianne Moore, formerly of St. Columban and an education assistant at St. Marys School in Goderich, is another award winner who "fosters the love of learning and models positive social interactions in her students." Moore helped establish the first annual Soaring Spirits Games for special needs students which "overflowed with feelings of love, acceptance and pride" and was "a beautiful tribute to nuture and celebrate the individual gifts, self-worth and potential of all children." "She goes to great lengths to design activities and environments in which all of her students can participate in interesting, creative, and healthy learning activities alongside their age peers," said a board press release. Former Dublin resident who now lives in Mitchell, Margaret Rowland was also recognized. She is a retired teacher/consultant and archivist for the school board. Rowland "has given countless hours of her time beyond the school day to help students and teachers" and continues her involvement in many parish, community and school related projects. She has taken the Pastoral Leadership Program and continues to take courses to help participants renew their commitment as baptized Christians and deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith. Rowland is co-author of the book "Heart of Faith and Learning" and now works on a part-time basis researching and organizing the Huron Perth board's archives. Father Maurice Charbonneau, former pastor of St. Patrick's Church in Dublin and St. Vincent de Paul Church in Mitchell also received an award for his involvement in Christ in Others Retreat (COR), one of the fundamental ways that he reaches the youth. "You feel Christ when you're around Fr. Moe — you feel accepted, respected and loved," said the board press release. "He's like a whirlwind - breezes in, breezes out, and the kids are flying like kites after he has left! He is like a breath of fresh air that revives our faith!" Major changes come for Grade 10 literacy test By Stew Slater Special to the Expositor Major changes will be made in 2005-06 to try boosting province -wide success rates in the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), a standardized Grade 10 assessment that's Inspection & Free Disposal 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Seaforth Co-operative Children's Centre 82 Chalk Street, Seaforth Car seats over 10 years old • Bike or hockey helmets over 5 years old • Baby bath seats Cribs made before 1986 • Accordion -style baby gates • Baby walkers with wheels required for high school graduation. Since its introduction in 2002, the OSSLT has been held over two days in October, with the most recent edition being administered last fall to the current group of Grade 10s. There will be no 2005 edition, however, as the test will now be administered in March, thereby allowing for more extensive preparation throughout the Grade 10 study year. In addition, it will now be a single -day assessment, with the next one occurring on March 29, 2006. Last year, the Education ministry reacted to poor OSSLT success rates by creating the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course, aimed at assisting students who have difficulty performing under high- pressure test environments. Individual reports for each participating student were also introduced for this year, with the goal of enabling teachers to target the preparation tactics for those who must rewrite the test. "We really got very little back before, in terms of what could be done to help each student," explained Avon Maitland District School Board assessment coordinator Wally Webster, during a regular board meeting Tuesday, May 10. Recently -released results from the October, 2004 tests show improved results from the previous year. Among Academic -level Grade 10s, 94 per cent succeeded on the 2004 OSSLT, compared to 90 per cent in 2003. GRAY INSURANCE BROKERS INC. Excavating Inc 11;., frit For 1. Other success rates were 88 per cent at Listowel District and Stratford Northwestern secondary schools, and 87 per cent at F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham. Explaining the more detailed results, Webster asked Avon Maitland trustees to take specific note of a gender comparison. He said success rates among Avon Maitland males increased by 14 per cent from October, 2003, almost erasing a significant gap from their female counterparts and pulling them well ahead of males across the province. And among Applied -level students, last fall's success rate was 62 per cent, compared to 49 per cent in 2003. Results -- both old and new -- from the Avon Maitland and Huron -Perth Catholic District School Boards, however, show success rates in this district have remained consistently ahead of the provincial trend. In 2003, for example, 95 per cent of Avon Maitland's Academic -level Grade lOs passed the test. And at the May 10 meeting, Webster informed trustees the most recent test - - including a 98 per cent success rate for Academic - level and a 78 per cent success rate for Applied -level students -- was no different. "We're very pleased with the results," he said, before explaining highlights from the October, 2004 assessment. At the Catholic board, meanwhile, education superintendent Martha Dutrizac issued a news release stating "we are encouraged that the students of our secondary schools performed above the provincial average." Overall among students taking the OSSLT for the first time, there was an 89 per cent success rate in the Avon Maitland board and an 88 per cent success rate in Huron - Perth Catholic. Among those trying it for the second or third time, 78 per cent of Avon Maitland participants were successful, compared to 82 per cent in the Catholic board and 62 per cent province -wide. On a school -by -school basis, the top success rates in Huron and Perth were 96 per cent at Stratford Central, 95 per cent at St. Marys DCVI, 91 per cent at Stratford St. Michael and 90 per cent at South Huron District High School in Exeter. Those closest to the provincial average of 82 per cent -- although still above it -- were Mitchell District High School at 83 per cent,
