Election not wanted, says Steckle
By Cheryl Heath
Clinton News -Record Editor
Canadians are not hungry for an election.
That, says Huron -Bruce MP Paul Steckle, is
precisely the reason it is a mistake for the
Conservative Party of Canada to table a motion
calling for a no confidence vote on the minority
government.
Yet, on Monday night, that is what the
Conservative Party opted to do.
Steckle, who notes there has been "a lot of breast
beating" by the Conservatives on the issue, says he is
continually hearing from constituents that another
election is not wanted — nor needed — at this point.
He says fellow MPs, with the exception of those in Quebec,
are also hearing voters are not anxious to return to the polls.
One of the reasons for the reluctance, says Steckle, is the
$300 -million pricetag attached to such a move. The other
major detractor is Canadians first want to review the
full findings of the Gomery Inquiry, which is still
under way on the $100 -million sponsorship scandal.
When and if the no confidence is held,
Steckle is confident many Conservative MPs will
find an excuse to be away from the House of
Commons since the current situation amounts to
little more than political grandstanding on Harper's
part.
"Ultimately, people will find ways to stay
out of that vote," says Steckle, suggesting some MPs
will claim illness. "It could be a twisted this or a
payback

twisted that.
Steckle says Prime Minister Paul Martin's televised address
to Canadians on Thursday night was a sound maneuvre,
designed to demonstrate the current government's good faith.
"I am not the least bit embarrassed about our government's
record over the past 12 years," says Steckle, who
acknowledges "mistakes have been made" but he says those
who are accountable for it should pay and not the entire
government.
In the end, says Steckle, Canadians are unlikely to cast a
vote for the Conservatives — especially if the party were to
force an election down the throats of an unwilling electorate.
"There is simply no appetite (for it)," he says.
Steckle also says it was unfair for Harper to call the Liberal
deal with the New Democratic Party a "deal with the devil."
"I don't consider the NDP party to be a party of the devil,"
he says, noting Liberal party policies are closer to the left-
leaning party than any other.
The agreement, he notes, only requires the government to
expedite some plans that were already in place, including
funnelling more gas tax money to municipalities.
"They (the Conservatives) would see us become the 51st
state," he says.
French immersion
gets second chance
By Stew Slater
Special to the Expositor
With two previously -
dissenting trustees
apparently confident their
concerns had been
addressed, the Avon
Maitland District School
Board voted 7-2 in favour of
asking administration to
again look at the possibility
of introducing French
Immersion outside Stratford.
A report will now be
delivered to trustees on Oct.
25, 2005, "provid(ing)
information about a potential
French Immersion program
to start in September, 2006."
The present board first
requested information on a

a public delegation in
November, 2004, from a
representative of the group
Canadian Parents for French.
Following a series of
public information sessions
throughout the board, and a
survey of parents with
children already in the Avon
Maitland system, trustees
received a report suggesting
French Immersion should not
expand.
Early last month, South
Huron representative Randy
Wagler informed fellow
trustees he would bring the
issue back to the table for the
second meeting of the month
-- April 26.
He suggested "new
information" had been
provided by Canadian
Parents for French and a
local parent group affiliated
with the larger organization,
including during a meeting
with some Avon Maitland
trustees and staff.
"Generally, in rural
settings, enrolment tends to
grow over time ... which
would suggest you don't
need quite as high of
numbers to have a
sustainable program," Wagler
said, in defending his motion
to reVisit the issue.
North Huron trustee
Colleen Schenk seconded the
motion, saying; "most of us
were disappointed that
results were not better when
we did the survey originally."
But support for the
Wagler's idea seemed slow
to build at the April 26
meeting.
"I approve of looking at
this program, but just not at
this time," said Perth
South/West Perth
representative Carol
Bennewies. "I don't think the
numbers will change
sufficiently."
North Perth's Jenny
Versteeg and Central Huron's
Shelley Kaastra also
expressed opposition.
Kaastra wondered if all
parents are clear on the
possible introduction of
French Immersion, and the
fact it could be brought to a
school within their secondary
school feeder area but not
necessarily their child's
home elementary school.
And Stratford's Doug
Watley was concerned about
revisiting a decision made so
recently, arguing, "it sort of
smells of 'let's vote until we
get it right' ... Surely, our
staff have better things to do
than constantly survey the
same question over and over
again."
However, Kaastra and
Pratley eventually voted in
favour of Wagler's motion,
following expressions of
support for revisiting French
Immersion.
