Veterans from throughout Huron County will be honoured May 14 as part of a massive celebration to mark the 60th
anniversary of V.E. Day when the people of Holland were liberated. From the left are Frank Philips, an Air Force vet
who lives in Seaforth, Bob Campbell, an Army vet who served on D -Day, Air Force vet George Yeats, of Clinton, and
Don MacLean, an Able Seaman vet who calls Egmondville home. The vets are standing in front of a 1952 M35 cargo
truck, a 1944 Canadian -made military vehicle and a 1952 M38 jeep, all of which are owned by Gord Yeo near
Holmesville.
Goderich prepares to host veterans
By Tim Cumming
Goderich Signal Star Editor
Goderich is getting ready
to thank Canada's veterans
for the liberation of Europe
The Royal Canadian
Legion Branch 109 is
hosting two major events in
May in honour of the 60th
anniversary of Victory in
Europe (VE Day) and the
liberation of Holland and the
Year of the Veteran in
Canada.
The Legion is first hosting
an event for Goderich and
area veterans on May 8, the
60th anniversary of the
allied forces' liberation of
Europe on VE Day.
The Legion — in
cooperation with The Dutch
Liberation Diamond
Celebration Committee in
Goderich — are then joining
to host celebrations this May
14-15 to honour all
Canadian veterans for their
role in the liberation of
Holland and the rest of
Europe at the end of the
Second World War.
A committee, made up
representatives of the Legion
and the Dutch Liberation
Diamond Celebration
committee, have been
meeting every two weeks to
organize this year's events.
The May 8 and May
14-15 celebrations may be
the last events of this size to
honour our living veterans.
Events planned for this
May include a huge parade
that will celebrate veterans
and the Dutch culture that
allied forces preserved in
liberating the Netherlands
from Nazi oppression.
Veterans will not be
required to march in the
Goderich parade but they
will be visible, Rutledge
said.
ft will be very touching for
Dutch -Canadians and for
other local residents to see
veterans in the May 14
parade and know that this
will be the last big
celebration in which to thank
them for their contributions
and sacrifices.
"It will be very
emotional," Rutledge said. It
will bring back emotions for
the Dutch who recall their
liberation at the end of the
war — when they were

literally starving — and for
others who have been
touched by the sacrifice of
those who went overseas.
"All the way around it's
going to be a very emotional
day ... extremely so,"
Rutledge said.
Royal Canadian Legion
Branch 109 service officer
Hudson `Judd' Milburn said
the events are going to affect
many people.
"I think this is going to be
tremendous not only for -the
community and for the
veterans in the area but also
the Dutch people in the
area," he said.
The efforts to hold two
events in May, honouring
first local veterans and then
all Canadian veterans, are
coinciding with efforts by
the Dutch Liberation
Diamond Celebration
Committee to construct a
new pavillion as part of the
Dutch Liberation Parkette on
Victoria Street.
"We're full steam ahead
with the building project and
fundraising project," said
David Dykxhoorn, Chair of
the Dutch Liberation
Diamond Celebration
Committee.
The cooperation between
the Legion's committee and
the Dutch Liberation
committee is creating
something that will be
"wonderful for Goderich and
area," he said.
The contributions to the
efforts of the two
committees have come not
only from Goderich
individuals, businesses and
organizations but from
sources throughout Huron
County and beyond.
Rutledge said he could not
believe the donations from
organizations and businesses
that want to do their part to
recognize the
accomplishments and
sacrifices of our veterans.
Businesses have made
donations of everything from
meat, to dairy products to
fruits and vegetables to
transportation of goods,
materials and more.
"It's amazing," he said.
"The veterans are important
... people realize that."
VE Day — marking the
victory of Allied troops in
Europe and the end of the
Second World War — was
May 8, 1945.
How big are this year's
celebrations in Goderich?
Well, there are more than
1,000 pounds of beef being
donated to feed the veterans
and their guests.
Invitations to the May 14-
15 events have been sent out
to Legion branches across
the country.
There could be as many as
200 Goderich-area veterans
for the May 8 celebration
and hundreds more veterans
from across Canada for the
May 14-15 events.
Former soldiers who have
confirmed their intentions to
attend represent veterans of
Bomber Command, Dieppe,
HMCS Haida, the Far East,
the Italian and Normandy
campaigns, Canada's
Merchant Navy, #422
Squadron Royal Canadian
-Air Force (RCAF), Canadian
Army, Canadian Navy and
more.
Bands expected for the
May 14-15 weekend include
the Lincoln and Welland
Regimental Band, the
Queen's York Rangers Corp
of Drums, the Celtic Blue
Highlanders and the
Goderich Laketown Band.
Royal Canadian Legion
Branch 109, Goderich, is
hoping to track down all
Goderich and area veterans
prior to the May events. If
you are a veteran, but not a
member of the local Legion,
you are asked to contact
Rutledge at (519) 524-2605
or Barry Hastings at 440-
7626.
The Legion hopes to invite
all local veterans to the May
8 event and all veterans in
Canada to the May 14—May
15 Diamond Celebration.
Veterans are asked to
preregister by telephone,
letter, or e-mail and pick up
information packages at
Royal Canadian Legion,
Branch 109.
