Local farmers should be
able to put their crops in the
ground this spring after aid
packages announcements by
the federal and provincial
government last week, says
Huron County Federation of
Agriculture president Nick
Whyte.
"To the question of
whether it was enough or
not, it might not be as much
per head of cattle or per
bushel of crop as one might
hope it would be. This will
have to thought of as a
short-term solution," he
says.
Seaforth accountant and
part-time farmer Brian
Wightman agrees, saying,
"This is a good thing for
this year but what are we
going to have in the future.
There's a bit of
apprehension about the
following years."
Wightman says many
farmers should be receiving
a "meaningful payment"
from the $841.5 million

The placement of the garage makes this home suitable for a large, wider
building lot. With the garage situated at the back of the property, all
eyes are home itself. As a bonus, the garage becomes a drive-through,
allowing access to the backyard for storing a recreational vehicle or a
boat. An old-fashioned covered veranda completely surrounds the front
and part of both sides of the home, giving the exterior a farmhouse
look. A two-way fireplace in the parlor is shared by the dining room
which also has access to the veranda.

pledged by the federal
government through the
farm income payment
program (FIPP) general
program.
As well, he says corn and
soybean farmers should see
from $15-$25 per acre
through the $79 million
announced by the province.
"It's going to let them
come closer to the cost of
production. It should take
the sting away from the
losses incurred this year,"
says Wightman.
He says the FIPP direct
payment which will give
$19 per head of cattle will
not be as helpful.
"Nineteen dollars isn't
going to bail anybody out
from disaster but every
little bit helps," he says.
Whyte says the structure
of the agriculture industry
and government support has
to be improved so that
farmers don't have to go
from crisis to crisis.
"There is a recognition
from both levels of
government that there is a
problem and hopefully we
can work together to come
up with a solution," he says.
".The real solution is
twofold - to work to get the
border open into the U.S.
and to work on new markets
so we're not so vulnerable,"
Whyte says.

The April 3 sermon at
Cavan United Church was
titled, "The Church with
Nothing," the risen Christ
coming to inhabit our
personal empty spaces.
Collectors were Joyce
Ribey and Carol McClure.
After the service a very
tasty brunch was enjoyed
by a large crowd.
Convenors for the lunch
were Sherry McCall,
Karen Braeker and
Marion Hunt.
Cavan UCW met at the
church on March 30.
Guest speaker was Carla
Goodfellow of "Goodall
Landscaping" of Exeter.
She had many great
ideas of how to decorate
outdoors with trees,
shrubs and flowers. A
short business meeting
followed.
A new vacuum and
extension cord are to be
purchased. A healthy
lunch was served.
Susan MacDonald is
visiting her sister in
Calgary.
