Huron OPP to face off against NHL alumni
By Carissa Pertschy
Signal -Star Staff
Members of the Huron
OPP hockey team are gearing
up to face off against some of
the National Hockey
League's (NHL) finest
alumni members.
On Friday, Feb. 25 a dozen
members of the Huron OPP
hockey team will face off
against the likes of Dan
Daoust, Bill Derlago, Peter
Inachek, Mike Pelyk, Gary
Leeman, Wilf Paiement,
Wayne Carlton and many
other alumni hockey players
to help raise money for
Huron County Crime
Stoppers.
Senior Constable and
Crime Stoppers coordinator
Steve Beasley said
fundraising initiatives such as
the hockey game scheduled
for Feb. 25 are essential to
the success of Crime
Stoppers, as they don't
receive government funding.
With local heros such as
Don "the Clutcher"
Shropshall, Mark "Stoney"
Johnston, Marc "Rats" Ratte
and Dave "Godzilla" Gillan
rounding out the Huron OPP
team, Beasley cautioned
interested fans to purchase
tickets ahead of time.
"We have a good core of
players hitting the ice,"
Beasley said.
"This may be the only
NHL hockey that fans get to
see for a long time."
The Huron OPP have
claimed a consolation title
earlier this year during the
Goderich Kinsmen Club's
annual Recreational
Tournament on Jan 7-9.
"The tournament is a
combination of several
things. It's a
fundraiser, it's
an opportunity
for the
community to
see former
NHLers play
hockey, and
it's also a
family
oriented
event."
All money
raised will be
used within
the county's
Crime
Stoppers unit
to help pay
tipsters, purchase
promotional items, fund
bursaries and pay day-to-day
expenses.
Crime Stoppers is a
partnership of the public,
police and
media which
provides the
community
with a
proactive
program for
people to
assist the
police
anonymously
to help solve
crimes.
"This is the
first time our
Crime
Stoppers has
taken on a
task so large,"
Beasley commented of the
tournament planning.
Plans for the event have

been unfolding over the last
10 months.
If the game goes well, there
is a possibility the initiative
will be turned into an annual
event, he noted.
As well as providing fans
with a chance to watch some
top-notch hockey, there are
several prices to be awarded.
"Come out, help raise
funds, see good hockey,
enjoy lots of prizes,
giveaways and promotions,"
Beasley said.
Between the first and
second period of the game, a
skills competition will be
hosted by the NHL alumni
team,.
Goderich Tim Hortons has
donated two bicycles to use
as prizes - for other
competitions as well.
Beasley said there would
be "a few other surprises and
lots of cool things to give
away. Don't miss the great
night of fun."
As an added treat, kids who
wear a hockey jersey are
eligible for special prizes.
After the showdown ends,
both teams will be on hand to
talk with fans and sign
autographs.
The puck drops at 7 p.m. in
the Maitland Recreation
Centre in Goderich.
Organizers hope to see
1,000 plus fans in attendance.
Seating is first-come first
serve, and there will be
standing room on the track
above the rink as well.
Tickets, which are $12 for
adults, and $8 for children,
are available at the YMCA
on Suncoast Drive, or by
calling 527-0521.
Huron County Library Association picks up .technology award at conference
By Cheryl Heath

State-of-the-art
information services are not
just for large urban centres
any more.
And the Huron County
Library Association proved
that in style, Thursday, at
the annual Ontario Library
Association conference
where it picked up the
Ontario Library and
Information Technology
Association (OLITA) Award
for Technological
Information for its Reuben
R. Sallows Digital Library.
OLITA officials note the
library was chosen among a
dozen nominees and that
judges were most impressed
with both the quality of the
project and the number of
partnerships it inspired.
The Ontario Library and
Information Technology
Association recognizes
annually the best example
of technological innovation
entered in one of the
following categories; library
users, library operations,
partnerships, and leadership
— the Reuben R. Sallows
Digital Library won in all
four categories.
Marian Doucette, as
Project Leader, accepted the
award on behalf of the
Huron County Library.
Doucette accepted the
award, adding, "thank you
for acknowledging and
honouring our efforts."
She notes the project had
the double-edged effect
paying tribute to history and
documenting the story of
Sallows.
The Huron County Library
joins an honoured group of
larger libraries.
Other recent winners of
this award have included
Peterborough Public Library
for the 24/7 TEKdesk,
Vaughan Public Libraries
for Global Librarian, and
Toronto Public Library for
Historicity.
Support for our project
was received from the
Ontario Ministry of Culture,
Library Strategic
Development Fund and The
Department of Canadian
Heritage. Project partners
were the Huron County
Library, The Reuben R.
Sallows Gallery, County of
Huron, Town of Goderich,
Huron County Museum &
Historic Gaol, Huron
County Historical Society,
Archives of Ontario,
University of Guelph
Library Archival and
Special Collections, J.J.
Tatman Regional Collection
at the University of Western
Ontario Libraries.
