Huron
County
Health
Unit
to distribute
more than
700 smoke
detectors
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
More than 700 smoke detec-
tors purchased by the Huron
County Health Unit began
being distributed throughout
the county through the Huron
County Christmas Bureau in
December.
"We know that scalds and
burns are one of the leading
causes of injury to children
under the age of six and we
thought this was one more way
of keeping children safe," said
Erica Arnett, health promoter
for the health unit.
The smoke detectors were
funded by both the federal and
provincial governments
through the Early Childhood
Development and Injury
Prevention committee and the
Huron County Farm and Safety
Association.
In Seaforth, the Christmas
Bureau has already handed out
two dozen smoke detectors.
`"They go wherever the need
is;' said Huron Fast fire chief
Marty Bedard.
Bedard said that. while the
fire department already gives
out free smoke detectors if,
while responding to a fire call, it
is noticed that a home does not
have a smoke detector on each
floor of the building.
But, through the existing pro-
gram, only one or two are dis-
tributed each year.
Through the Christmas
Bureau, families were asked if
they needed smoke detectors
and were given vouchers to
hand in to the local fire depart-
ment for a free one.
Smoke detectors will also be
given out through the Healthy
Children, Healthy Babies pro-
gram in Huron County.
"It's a great source of preven-
tion," said Arnett of the smoke
detector program. "Smoke
detectors will continue to be
distributed throughout the
year."
