Skate Canada decides toadiscontinue regional
competition in Seaforth's second year as host

A Skate Canada decision
to discontinue small
competitions at rural arenas
has caused the cancellation
of the second year of a two-
year regional figure skating
competition at the Seaforth
arena, says Seaf'brth figure
skating club president Deb
Ward.
"Because the judges are
getting up there in age and
are too stretched (busy), they
decided to get rid of the
small competitions
altogether. It's pretty
disappointing," says Ward.
The Seaforth figure
skating club spent several
years fundraising $14,000 to
buy a new sound system for
the Seaforth arena in order to
qualify to host last year's
competition.
Close to 200 skaters from
12 area clubs participated in
the Interclub North regional
competition last year in
Seaforth for the first time in
10 years.
But, the local executive
was informed shortly after
last February's competition
that the second year of
Seaforth's turn to host it
would be cancelled.
While Seaforth's skaters
are still eligible to compete
in the larger competitions in
cities such as London,
Kitchener and Cambridge,
Ward says the Seaforth club
- which is mostly
recreational - has had trouble
"focussing" this year.
"We've always been a
recreational club that
encouraged competition but
we're a little gun shy about
the bigger competitions. The
larger competitions are more
nerve-wracking and the
whole atmosphere is a lot
tougher," she says.
"We've been criticized by
Skate Canada for not
pushing our kids harder
because they're trying to
produce a higher calibre of
skater at the junior level.
But, a lot of our kids just
want to skate and have some
fun. They don't want to be in
the competitive market,"
says Ward.
New Skate Canada criteria
stipulates that competitions
must be held at arenas with
two ice surfaces in the same
building, a requirement that
rules out most rural arenas,
says Ward.
The only existing facilities
with two ice surfaces in the
same buildinglocally are the
Labatt's Centre in London
and rinks in Kitchener and
Cambridge.
Ward says travelling to
cities for competitions puts a
greater financial burden on
rural parents but that parents
who are interested will be
able to find coaches in
Huron County who want to
take students to
competitions.
"In rural Canada, driving
long distances isn't always
an option," she says.
And, of the 14 small local
clubs which sent skaters to
the Interclub North
competition that has been
cancelled, "there are going to
be clubs that just don't want
to compete anymore," she
says.
In arguing to continue the
small rural competitions,
Ward says she tried to make
the point that "Lloyd Eisler
didn't come from a big city
like London."
To become a more
competitive figure skating
club, Ward says Seaforth
skaters would have to be on
the ice every day, not the two
nights a week they are now.
Still, she believes the
small competitions had a
place in local figure skating.
