Huron Expositor, 2004-10-06, Page 1616-T14E HURON EXPOSITOR, Oct. 0, 2004 Atom and pee wee girls' hockey teams offered in Seaforth By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor Two girls' hockey teams are being offered in Seaforth this year at the atom (age nine and 10) and pee wee (age 11 and 12) levels. "This is the first time we've been able to make it happen for a while. We've got 30 girls playing hockey since more and more girls are showing interest in hockey," says Seaforth minor hockey president Kevin Williamson. While some of the girls have left ringette to play hockey, others are playing both hockey and ringette this year. Williamson said the parents of girls who wanted to play hockey have been actively recruiting players since spring to find enough to form some girls' teams. While most of the girls are from Seaforth, four are travelling from Clinton where girls' hockey is not offered. Kevin Melady, who is coaching one of the girls' teams, says the girls are "a good group of skaters" who have experience at hockey or ringette. "Hopefully, it's going to be competitive and the girls are having fun," he said. Melady said that while Seaforth has offered girls' hockey before at the bantam and midget levels, there has been a full year's lull in the program. "More and more girls are interested these days in hockey because of women's hockey in the Olympics," he said.
