After building a seven -foot trellis and putting "two little plants" in the ground, McGregor was amazed to watch as his gourd plant "grew and grew and grew" until he had to dig a 45 -inch hole in the ground to accommodate its 114.75 -inch length. "I wondered at the time (when the plants were put in the ground) if he was going to get his vines over the top. But, 1 stuck him in and he grew, sometimes as much as 12 inches a day. He came down lickety scoot," he said. Though the gourd was the longest at Port Elgin's Pumpkinfest, organizers are still researching whether it's the longest in the world after 23 pumpkin festivals were held around the world on the same day as Port Elgin's. "It's the biggest we've ever seen but research is still ongoing. We are filling out the paperwork for the Guinness Book of World Records," said Port Elgin Pumpkinfest coordinator Joanne Robbins on Monday. While he's been growing hanging ornamental gourds for four years, McGregor has been entering giant pumpkins at Port Elgin's Pumpkinfest for the past 10 years. "My pumpkins come first and the gourds are secondary but that guy just took over this year," he said. Once the gourd grew past 100 inches, McGregor started to wonder if he had a winner since the world record is 110 inches. "They usually stop at 107 inches," he said. "The biggest challenge with this one was digging the hole." While McGregor is living in Hensall, he grew the gourd at the farm of Wayne McBride in Kippen. He also got help from 11 - year -old Dustin Mathonia, of Hensall, who came to the garden with him throughout the summer and helped to tend the plants. "He is my right hand man," said McGregor. Mathonia came first in a regional competition with a 90.25 -inch gourd while McGregor followed with a 75.5 -inch gourd, both of which they grew together. Before McGregor harvested the award-winning gourd in August, he had a visit from the Port Elgin Pumpkinfest organizers, who thought he had a winner even then. "This one could be the biggest ever. If it is, we're going to apply to the Guinness Book of World Records for consideration," said Pumpkinfest's grower director Dave McCallum before the final competition. The giant fruit, part of the cucurbitacca family, was started from a four-year-old seed McGregor had lying around the house. "It was a seed from another big one I had that came in second," he said. The gourd went from 41 inches on July 30 to its current size at 116.5 inches by Aug. 21. The gourd shrunk a little before the competition over the weekend. "i was giving away dogfood and Licsa wanted it. When we found out we were both from Huron County, we thought why aren't we doing it here?" says McCardle. Since then, the website has attracted close to three dozen members who are eager to give away everything from small appliances to a wheelchair. And, it is part of an • international movement as one of close to 1,500 groups and 513,000 members worldwide. "It's growing everywhere. in London, we approve 10 new members a day and in Huron County it's been growing in (caps and bounds over the last month," says McCardle. The key to the site, says Thomas, is all products must he free. Indeed, it is moderated to ensure bartering and sales are not taking place. As well, members must be approved to limit the spam and junk mail on the website. "it's a lot of fun and it's a great way of helping out the planet," he says. So far, McCardle has seen giveaways ranging from brcadmakers, desktop fans and dogfood to large appliances like dryers. Thomas says the site gives area residents an opportunity to benefit from another's largesse. which is an especially appealing benefit for students attending post- secondary school away from home. it helps the environment, too, since products are not dumped at landfill sites.
