Huron Expositor, 2004-08-25, Page 1212-TNE HURON EXPOSITOR, Aug. 25, 2004 News Skateboarding "addictive" according to active boarder From Page 1 skateboarders and spend time every day practising tricks on their "decks." "It's addictive. Once you start, you can't really stop. You'll always ride because of .the thrill of doing stuff with just a piece of wood under you," says Feeney. The three take their skateboards to high school with them on the bus to Clinton and use their lunch hour to ride. "We have an hour and 17 minutes for lunch so there's lots of time to skateboard," says McNichol. But, with the creation of a skate park in Seaforth, the "hard core" skateboarders are seeing a lot more local kids taking up the sport. "We're seeing all ages here. Everybody's getting into it," says McNichol. While some of the younger kids are accompanied by watching parents, 'McNichol says no one should be intimidated to use the skate park. Quoted 'It took me two months to learn the kickflip. And you also need guts, balance and mental ability to remember the foot positions,' - Jason Wilson, beginner skateboarder "Everyone's friendly here. No one's mean to other skateboarders. McNichol says the older, more experienced skateboarders like to help out the younger kids with their tricks. The most basic tricks are ollies, which are jumps in the air with the skateboard, and kick flips, where the skateboard does a barrel roll in the air. "When you first try skateboarding, you can usually only get the front wheels to go up when you try to ollie. But, you have to learn to ollie since you have to ollie into any other trick. And, you never really master it because you can always go higher," says McNichol. To be able to grind or slide on a railing or any other surface, a skateboarder has to be able to ollie as high as the railing. Apparatus like quarter - pipes allow skateboarders to learn to balance and use more height and speed for their tricks. "You're set when you learn the ollie and the kick flip because everything builds on those tricks," says Sheppard. Jason Wilson, 14, of Seaforth, says he's a beginner who's skateboarding more with a local park. "It's challenging. It took me two months to learn the kick flip. And, you also needguts, balance and mental ability to remember the foot positions," he says Sean Frasier, 12, of Seaforth, says that while he tried skateboarding when he was younger, he's concentrating more on it this year with the new skate park in town. "Keeping your feet on the board is the hardest part but 1 just watch the other people and their moves and see what they do," he says. "The odd time, if 1 do something wrong, the older guys will build up my self- esteem - if I say that I suck. Matt Oliver, 8. of Seaforth, says he's spending a lot of time at the new skate park since he could only skateboard in his laneway before the park was built. .....• . Brian and Marlene Price and Wayne and Joyce Hugill are pleased to announce the forthcoming marriage of their children Amy Margaret Price Harold Wesley Hugill The ceremony will take place on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004 at 3 p.m. at Main Street United Church in Mitchell "It's fun," he says. "Look at all the cuts on my legs," he adds proudly. Injuries are part of the sport, says McNichol, who has been on crutches with a twisted ankle and had his arm in a sling with a sore shoulder. "The board hits you in the shins and ankles all the time and that hurts," he says. "If you mess up, your teeth go through your lip and you go home all bloody. But. we're more experienced now and we don't fall down as much. And, when we do. it's harder," adds Feeney. Another hazard of the sport is breaking your skateboard, which can 'happen pretty frequently if you land a trick wrong. At $49 to $100 for a deck (or thc board part of the skateboard) or $89 to $200 for a package of the deck, wheels and bearings, going through equipment can get expensive. "You can go through a lot of decks. This year, I've gone through six. They snap in the middle or on the ends," says Feeney. Sheppard says there's a lot of misconceptions about kids who like skateboarding. Forthcoming Marriage per Bull We are pleased to announce the forthcoming marriage of Michelle Anne daughter of Robert and Helen Loper of Ottawa and Robert Louis son of Thomas and Betty Bull of Ottawa. Marri' ; e will take place Se ' ember 4th 2004 at Laof Our Visitation in 0 • wa. Robert is the °rands 1 of Louis Nigh and the late an Nigh of Seaforth Ontario. "People label us as stoners and give us a bad name. They think we're rebels," he says. "Everyone says skaters listen to punk music but they probably do less than anyone else," adds Feeney. And, while McNichol says most skateboarders usually avoid the stereotypical baggy pants because they "get in the way" and are therefore dangerous, they do wear flat-bottomed skateboard shoes because it's important to be able to grip the skateboard. "You don't need special shoes but they should be flat so you. get a better feel for the deck," he says. While they try to emulate pro skaters, the Seaforth skateboarders dont think they'll be entering any competitions or making a career out of the sport. "This is a park to learn the basics. I don't think we're good enough here for competitions," says McNichol. "We're always laughing at each other here. We don't take anything too seriously," he says. "If we kept working at it, we could go big but it's hard to go pro. You have to be committed," says Sheppard.
