Lions Park, started in 1925, is club's largest contribution to Seaforth From Page 1 which began around 1925. According to Elliott, one of their biggest contributions to the town has been the Lion's Park, located on the edge of town on Highway 8. In 1925, the Lions started the development of Seaforth Park when they purchased two acres of land, which incorporated an abandoned limestone quarry. The club worked to clean silt from the bottom and added a raft and diving board to the park. The pool began to be difficult to dredge the silt out of so in 1935, the Lions erected a cement retaining wall on the south side of the pool. A cement retaining wall was built on the south side of the pool and a stone wall 11111 MA NM NI NI MMI 1E1 MI SW 1111 Back to School Special! 4.4 cu. ft. As well, a cement floor was laid so the pool had two levels. The pool, which measured 80 by 100 feet, also had a drainage hole to allow for drainage and cleaning. In late August of 1935, the club hosted the pool's grand opening. which began the annual Seaforth Lions Carnival, which ongoing," said Elliott. "It's certainly something that if the town had to provide it and maintain it on their own, I think could be a challenke financially," said Elliott. Turnbull said he was glad that the pool is around for the kids because it "keeps a lot of the kids occupied Quoted 'It's (Lions Park is) probably the most enduring physical thing we've done and it's ongoing,' -- Cathy Elliott continued until 1981. Then in 1956. the pool was moved from Silver Creek to a cement pool (which measured 45 by 100 feet) with a filtration system. The money was raised by the sale of car raffle tickets. "As the years went on. the contamination in the creek water wasn't considered too safe," said Turnbull. According to Elliott. the Lions have raised over $200,000 to help expand the park. "It's probably the most enduring physical thing we've done and it's during the summer holidays. (It's) Someplace to go, something to do," said Turnbull. Around 1970, the Seaforth Lions added a flood control dam to the park, Centennial Gates at the park's enterance. a wading pool and a picnic pavilion. Then in 1980. the club raised almost 575,000, which along with government grants. helped upgrade the pool. As well the Lions added new lighting to the improved hall diamond at a cost of $140.000. Elliott said that the pool's filter is "living on borrowed time." "We know that in a few years we're going to need major, major pool repairs," said Elliott. Turnbull said the decline in membership is the biggest issue facing the club is the decline in membership. Currently, the club has 16 members, which Turnbull said is "not enough." "The younger people, they're busy I guess," he said. The Lions are hoping to have a membership drive in the fall to help increase their membership. "It's a great organization and group of people to belong to on a personal level. The work they do for the community is really fulfilling," said Elliott. The 80th anniversary party will feature music by Dave Hoy, Princess Karma's magic show, hotdogs and pop at 1924 prices and free swimming at the Lion's Pool. The anniversary party will take place at Lion's Park on Sunday from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Swimmers in 1938 swim in the lions Park pool built in Silver Creek before the river became too comtaminated to swim in and was replaced by the current pool at lions Park. Corrections A story in a recent edition of the Huron Expositor about Papple's Garden Centre incorrectly quoted Tyler Papple. The correct quotation should have read "No one wants to sec an established and well - liked business forced off Main Street without a good reason." Another recent story in the Huron Expositor misidentified Samantha Soper as the granddaughter of Dianna Wcirmicr. The two are not related by blood. The end of summer doesn't mean the end of mosquitoes. We think of Labour Day as the end of summer. But mosquitoes can pose a threat well into September. So it's important to protect yourself and your children as we all resume normal work and school schedules. Many 'doctors' offices, clinics, pharmacies and grocery stores have pamphlets explaining steps you can take to protect yourself and your children.
