Model T visit evokes memories
To the Editor,
Seaforth and area stepped back in time recently when about
20 members of The Model T Ford Club International toured
their antique vehicles through our area. Their visit evoked a lot
of memories.
Lunchtime talk at Hurley's Celtic Inn centred around a black
and white photo of Model Ts gathered at the site of the town's
former hotel. Across the road, folks at McLaughlin Chev Olds
remembered the days when they were the site of a Ford
dealership.
And, as the Model Ts were escorted along Main Street by the
Seaforth All Girls Marching Band, anecdotes from the past
were shared between those gathered on the sidewalks to watch.
it was fitting that the Model Ts would stop at the historic Van
Egmond House, once owned by Constant, the son of Colonel
Anthony Van Egmond who helped build the Huron Tract and
open this region.
Tom Melady and his friends added to the feeling of nostalgia
with some fabulous music played on the grounds.
Thank you for your coverage which surely helped draw a
crowd. Thank you also to all others who helped make the day a
success.

As Finance Minister, Martin had to know
about sponsorship scandal, says reader
To the Editor,
Contrary to Mr. Hill's
assertion in his recent letter
to the editor, Prime Minister
'Paul Martin had to know
what was going on because
he was Finance Minister for
most of the Chretien years
and for the duration of the
scandal.
Furthermore, he is evasive
on how to recover the money
from the scandal. Even Mr.
Steckle has said $100
million plus is nothing to be
concerned with in the
scheme of things.
1 draw an analogy between
the late Mr. Trudeau and Mr.
Martin_ Trudeau loved his
country but was unwilling to
tight for it.
Mr. Martin loves his
country but is unwilling to
support it with his taxes as
the Canada Steamship Lines
are registered in a foreign
country thereby avoiding
tax. Not a very
commendable act.
We sorely need people of
the calibre of Stephen
Harper and Barh Fisher to he
in government at Ottawa.

Fisher showed leadership as MPP
for Bruce, says Clifford resident
To the Editor,
I would like to bring to the attention of the residents of
Huron -Bruce some of the accomplishments of Barb Fisher,
when she was the MPP for Bruce.
1. The approval and installation of the C.T. scanner for
Walkerton.
This piece of equipment impacts most of the small
hospitals in Huron -Bruce and is now a permanent fixture.
Barb took an important and active role in this project and
also helped to sec that no small hospitals closed!
2. Barb Fisher met with the staff at the Walkerton Jail and
developed and presented a plan which helped to keep this
facility open - when many were slated to close!
3. With regard to the Walkerton Water tragedy, Barh
Fisher was deeply involved in the response team.
These are just a few areas in which Barh Fisher has
shown leadership. I would hope, with her track record, the
citizens of Huron -Bruce would reward her at the polls on
June 28.
Yours trul'.

Funding health while cutting taxes impossible
To the Editor,
The federal election is
underway and the
mudslinging begun. It should
not be necessary but too often
in the past attack ads have
proven effective.
Mr. Martin unveils a health
program that consists of past -
unfulfilled promises in the
hope the great unwashed will
not remember. .
We need to take -care where
the Conservatives stand on
health care. Stephen Harper
suggests he supports a fully
funded public system. No talk
of privatization here. He also
states he will implement tax
cuts.
To do both is an impossible
feat. Voters must be careful to
avoid this seductive trap. It
will help to remember that
prior to the calling of the
election it was much
published how Mr. Harper's
handlers were portraying him
as a moderate moving to the
centre.
Do not for a moment think
he and the Conservatives
have become overnight
moderates. This is a federal
election not the road to
Damascus
Jack Layton manages to put
some substance in his health
care proposal and probably is
the most trustworthy in his
desire to maintain a full
public health system.
It was unfortunate he forgot
policies are the issues and
launched into a personal
attack on Paul Martin
blaming him for the deaths of
street people in Toronto. That
Liberal govemments have not
had housing as a priority is
true, , but provincial
governments -are also guilty of
ignoring this issue.
Better for voters to know
that starting with the CCF,
there is little in Canada's
much -admired social safety
net programs that was not
initiated and fought for by
Social Democrats.
Our national health care
system will not he "fixed"
until we accept the needs and
decide to pay for them
through our taxes. That will
never happen through tax
cuts.
Forty years ago Canada did
not have an increasing aging
population living longer:
many of the sophisticated
testing that saves lives did not
exist: drugs that allow those
with debilitating conditions to
have a productive life did not
exist. Transplants, common
now. were rare. These are
realities and unless we want
to bring in eugenics and
euthanasia or let people die
through benign neglect, we
should accept them. We know
the choices. It is a matter of
whom we most trust.
