Soaring Spirits athletes
compete in Special
Olympics activities

There is a first time for
everything.
Students,. staff and
volunteers at St. Mary's
Catholic School made history
on Tuesday, May 25 as the
school staged their first ever
Special Olympics event.
The games were open to all
elementary schools in the
Huron -Perth Catholic District
School Board, as competitors
came from as far amlay as
Stratford, Hesson and Exeter
to take part in the day's
festivities.
"It was a big*er success
than we thought it was going
to be," said event staff
coordinator Heidi Elliott. "It
was just activity after activity
for (the kids)."
Elliott, who planned the
maiden version of the St.
Mary's Special Olympics
with fellow staff coordinator
Julienne Ryan, said the event
was over a year in the
making.
According to Elliott, the
idea was conceived in the
spring of 2003 when she
attempted to enter her special
needs students from St.
Mary's in the Friendship
Games hosted by Goderich
District Collegiate Institute
(GDCI).
"Unfortunately, (GDCI) just
had too many kids," Elliott said.
"We really couldn't compete as
a catholic school, so we said
`let's have our own games.""
As with any event of this
magnitude, Elliott said the
organizers relied heavily on
volunteer support.
Parent volunteers, St.
Mary's Grade 7 and 8
students and 15 students from
St. Anne's Catholic
Secondary School in Clinton
all contributed their time and
efforts to the games.
"We have such a fabulous
staff (at St. Mary's)," Elliott
said. "Everyone lent a helping
hand."
The decision to hold the
Special Olympics at St.
Mary's was an easy one to
make for Elliott and Ryan, as
they felt the Goderich school
deserved to host the games as
much as any other school in
the Huron -Perth region.
"It was our idea," Elliott
said, "so we wanted them at
our school."
The games themselves
were also highlighted by
numerous non-competitive,
creative activities including
paint gun art and a pie in the
face game, which Elliott said
was by far the favourite
among the participants.
Elliott added that plans are
already in the works for the
second annual Catholic
school Special Olympics, as
she expects next year's event
to draw about three times as
many participants as the 2004
version.
The 2005 games will likely
include secondary schools as
well as elementary level
students, and the location will
likely move to St. Anne's to
better accommodate the
expected increase in
competitors.
