Seaforth Novice ringette team
wins Huron -Perth championship
By Susan Hundertmark

A couple of vans piled full
of eight and nine-year-old
girls spent at least half an
hour Friday night honking
their horns around Seaforth
after winning the Novice
ringette Huron -Perth
championship.
A 5-4 win against Forest
sends the Seaforth Novice
team to London this weekend
as the rep team at the
Western Region
championships for the C
division.
"It was such an exciting
game," said coach Anne
Marie Bedard.
Because the Seaforth
Novice team came home
from the regional tournament
last year with a silver medal,
Bedard said she's hoping for
gold this year.
"We were Huron -Perth
champs last year as well.
And, the girls did very well
all season this year," she
says.
Goal scorers at Friday
night's game were Megan
Bedard, 2, Shannon Murray,
Kristen Nolan and Marissa
Scott.
"And, our goalie really
held us inthere," said
Bedard, praising Kylie
Hendriks.

Seaforth preparing events
for Ontario Senior Games
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
Seaforth will be hosting
two events in the Huron,
Perth arid Middlesex district
of the Ontario Senior Games
this year.
While it hosted golf last
year, Seaforth will also host a
crokinole tournament, along
with the golf again this year,
says organizer Beth Pryce.
"We're hoping for good
participation in the crokinole
since some seniors play a
couple times a month at
Maplewood Manor. I've been
telling them they want to get
their fingers exercised to be
ready," she says.
The crokinole event will be
held at the Seaforth Legion
on May 4 at 1 p.m. while the
golf event will be held at the
Seaforth Golf and Country
Club on June 8.
While about 30 Seaforth
seniors participated in the
games last year, Pryce says
she's hoping for increased
participation this year.
But, she's worried that it
might be tough to find card
players for the five different
card -playing events since
local card players are aging.
"There's no card players in
the younger generation and
we're running out of
participants in that kind of
thing. We usually have quite
a few euchre players but
t''iey're getting older," she
says.
Participants must register
for the senior games before
April 16 with Marty Bedard
at Seaforth's town hall.
This year's events include
solo on May 3 in
Londesboro, pepper on May
20 in St. Marys, snooker on
May 18 in Strathroy, 10 -pin
bowling on May 31 in
London, duplicate bridge on
June 2 in Stratford and a
three-person triathlon
(swimming, hiking and
walking) in St. Marys on
June 11.
Events in which the
winners move on to the
Actifest Games in St.
Cathcrines from Aug. 16 to
18 include darts in Parkhill
on May 5, shuffleboard in
Goderich on May 11, hid
euchre in Delaware on May
13, five -pin howling in
Zurich on May 14, contract
bridge in Stratford on May
19, carpet bowling in Exeter
on May 17, horseshoes in
Stratford on May 25.
cribbage in Glencoe on May
27, swimming in Stratford orr
May 28, lawn howling in
Mitchell on June 1, walking
in Goderich on June 3, tennis
in Exeter on June 7, bocci in
St. Marys on June 10 and
euchre in Lucan on June 17.
The awards banquet will
be held June 17 in Exeter.

Local ringette girls bring home
gold from provincial tournament
By Andy Bader
Mitchell Advocate Editor
Three Seaforth ringette
players were named
provincial champions this
past weekend with the
Mitchell Newtech Ag Inc.
Junior 'A' ringette team.
The squad brought home
the gold medal from the
seven -team provincial
tournament in Richmond
Hill, defeating Hamilton 4-3
in sudden -death overtime to
win the top prize.
The win was especially
sweet as most of the team
were silver medal winners at
the provincials one year
ago, and two years before
that, the tween-aged girls
brought home the provincial
bronze.
"It was a battle," said
head coach Gary Ryan
Monday. "It was definitely a
battle."
Ryan said the team had its
sights set on gold from the
outset of the year, and added
three players to their roster
from Seaforth and Exeter
since there was not a junior
'A' team playing in those
centers.
Ryan said it was a
•challenge to get 15 and 16 -
year -olds from other centers
and associations to mesh,
but these girls did. •
"They came together -
both on and off the ice -
very well," he said.
Added to the roster from
Seaforth were Sarah
Finlayson, Kristen Flanagan
and Lindsay Nash.
Going into the finals,
Mitchell and Hamilton
teams were deadlocked at 3-
3 after regulation time.
Sudden -death followed,.
with Nash's shorthanded
backhander finding a way
through a crowd and into
the net, giving Mitchell the
championship.
"I can't even describe the
feeling," Ryan said. "After
seeing the looks on the girls
faces last year when we lost
to West Ferris, it was nice to
see their hard work pay off."
Laura Scott scored two
goals in the final, with
Kristen Flanagan adding a
single.
Mitchell was voted the
sportsmanship award as
well as the gold, as each of
the teams selected the club
they felt was worthy of the
honour.
"That was like a feather in
our cap," he said.
"A lot of people came up
to us and asked where
Mitchell was," he said. "It
was a good win for a small
center."
