A day -long workshop, held at the unit Thursday, featured guest speaker Karen McLean of Ontario's Program Training and Consultation Centre (PTCC). McLean, a resource consultant for the Ontario Ministry of Health, says the workshop is designed to help employers implement policies that prohibit smoking as well as introduce programs that help smokers kick the habit for good. One step in the right direction, says McLean, is for employers to form committees, comprised of a health and safety representative, managers, union representatives and employees who smoke, in order to formulate workable strategies to enforce the policy. "We want to make sure they have the tools they need to be successful," she says. McLean, who cites statistics that reveal anywhere from 1,700 to 7,800 Canadians die from second-hand smoke -related causes each year, says the session is designed to educate employers about the perils of second-hand smoke. It also teaches employers how to introduce proactive policies that do not vilify smokers. "We treat the smoke, not the smoker," she says. McLean, who notes she is pleased Huron County is going smoke-free in September, says second- hand smoke is a serious health hazard. She says the county's bylaw will finally bring a level of protection to restaurant employees who previously didn't enjoy the smoke-free policies already in effect in the white-collar sector. McLean says many of thc 30 participants at thc session were concerned about enforcing the smoke-free rule to which she suggests the designation should be treated like any other rule. She says employers should keep in mind that it is a sound business practice to introduce a smoke-free workplace given .that there has already been at least one case, involving an Ottawa waitress, where an employee had to be compensated for the ravages of second-hand smoke "There is nothing magical about smoking," says McLean, adding an employer would not be expected to have a designated drinking arca so it does not make sense for one to have to have a designated spot for smoking. McLean adds an employee would not want to work in an environment where there is asbestos (a carcinogen formerly used in insulation) in a ceiling so it doesn't make sense to want to work in a smoke- filled environment. Thursday's conference was organized by Sandra Feltz, a public health nurse.
