Huron Expositor, 2004-03-31, Page 5Opinion =MI Why does Seaforth needs to spend $io million on a water pipeline? To the Editor, How deep do your pockets go? There are a few things that need to be asked, starting with why are we spending money to research the possibility of bringing a water pipeline to Seaforth, when nobody I've talked to wants it. You need to ask yourself this question, "would you rather drink well water or lake water?" We all know that when the temperatures rise in the summer, you're warned not to swim at certain beaches, so why would you want to drink that water. The miniscule traces of radon that the public health officials have told us are well below concern, the reassurances by Tom Philips and others, should be enough to appease everyone's fears. So the question remaining is why do we want to spend $10 million or more on a pipeline? Maybe this falls under the same category as the wasted $100 million on advertising of the federal Liberal government. Then 'there is the increase for your hydro to cover their mismanagement, and the upcoming cost of the smart meter Premier Dalton McGuinty says you'll have to buy. These meters will be used to penalize seniors, parents that stay home with their kids, and families that eat dinner before 8 p.m. because they'll be using hydro in prime time. Maybe the money wasted on these meters could be used to research or even build new forms of energy, such as wind or solar. Let's not forget why your insurance went through the roof. That was so they could compile record profits to the tune of $3 billion plus. It's gotten to the point now you shop insurance first to see if you can afford to insure the vehicle that you want to buy. I was under the impression that rate increases had to be warranted. Gas at the pumps keeps going up. The top Ivan at Petro Canada received a $1 million top up to his salary Friday for doing a great job. What a great job: just keep increasing the price. Governments say they will put a stop to this, but with half the cost of gas being tax how hard are they really trying? There is no accountability anymore. Governments act more like a monopoly, not someone elected by the people, for the people. Why did our interests go by the wayside? If you have an opinion let someone know so maybe we can stop this cycle of being screwed. Bev Coleman Seaforth Kincardine resident on vacation impressed with band in Florida From Page 4 my life. They were courteous and tidy, occupying the top floor of our little three-storey hotel. Other than emptying the vending machines every day and squealing with joy in the pool, the girls of your town band behaved very well. They got up early to play in Busch Gardens and Disney World and certainly deserved their swim after playing in the hot sun in their uniforms. ' Much praise goes to the bus drivers, the chaperones, coaches, teachers and whoever else was along to make the trip so enjoyable for those young ladies. I used to chaperone air cadets so know how hard and demanding the job is. You did a fine thing volunteering your time to go on that trip. I hope the girls had a great time. I know 1 felt proud watching them, knowing they were from my area in Canada. So people of Seaforth, give your band a big hand the next time you watch them march and hear them play. The Seaforth Girls Marching Band is something to be proud of for sure. Mary Wilkinson Kincardine, Ont. Robertson gets nod from Huron -Bruce NDP members at nomination meeting By Matt Shurrie Goderich Signal -Star Editor Huron -Bruce New Democratic Party members didn't look far when it came time to choosing a candidate for the upcoming federal election. Grant Robertson, a 38 -year- old family farmer from the Paisley area and the local riding president, was selected to carry the NDP banner in the upcoming federal election during the party's nomination meeting last Saturday at the Goderich Lawn Bowling Club. Robertson ran for the party in the last provincial election. "I am honoured to represent the NDP because we have consistently put first the interests of today's families," Robertson said upon accepting the nomination. "While the other two parties seem to only care about which insider gets to belly up to the trough, the NDP has been standing up for quality health care, for farm families, for education our students can afford, for opportunity for all, for a green and prosperous economy and for a society where no one is left behind." Hank Koskamp, a Ripley resident who immigrated to Canada from Holland in 1950, challenged Robertson. During his speech Koskamp, a director at • Lucknow District Co-op for the past six years and president in 2003, said he would like to see a Canadian government that commits more of the gross national product towards international aid and developing countries. Robertson, on the other hand, took aim at all federal governments over the last 20 years. "Winning for the sake of winning is not enough. If the pursuit of power was all I cared about we have homes for people like that — called the Liberal and Conservative parties," Robertson said. "As new democrats we pursue electoral success as part of a movement to bring about real change in this country and that poll is important because after 20 years of Mulroney and the Chretien/Martin duel it is time to take our country back." Robertson pointed to the recent sponsorship scandal as • the primary reason Canadians should choose change when they are called to the polls. "This wonderful country was not created by CEOs, nor was it created, by the small corporate elite or by the high paid lobbyists or insiders with the Liberal and Conservative parties," Robertson said. "No, this amazing country - which is the envy of most of the world - was built by all of us. Robertson said the prime minister likes to pretend that he has no history with the current scandal when, in fact, he was the right-hand man of Chretien. Robertson said proof the NDP is poised to make "historic gains" across the country and in Huron- Brucc is evident in the number of memberships already sold and the high interest in solutions being put forward by the party. "It is our vision that has helped build this amazing country," Robertson said. Robertson, representing the NDP, will go head-to-head with incumbent Liberal MP Paul Steckle and Conservative Party of Canada candidate Barb Fisher, of Kincardine.
