Clinton -News Record photo (Top) Sarah (Julie Ducharme), Johnny (Dan Miller) and Max (Ron Young) sing a fire - breathing dragon (Chris Hofsele) to sleep during the Fairy Tales and Wonders play, performed for a capacity crowd at the St. Anne's Catholic secondary school cafeteria last Friday. The capacity crowd audience featured students from Clinton Public school and area children enrolled in Ontario Early Years centre programs. (Right) Gretel (Lisa Smith), of Hansel and Gretel fame, runs off the weight Friday during the play, Fairy Tales and Wonders, presented by the Grade 11 class. The capacity crowd audience featured students from Clinton Public school and area children enrolled in Ontario Early Years centre programs. (Julie Ducharme) and Johnny (Dan Miller) and their fellow classmates wore made -from -scratch outfits to depict the stars of children's books, including Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel. The play's plot revolves around the main trio's desire to help Mother Goose, who was led to believe her popular tales were cooked because an evil wizard took them. First, the friends must find the wizard - who eventually proves to he simply misunderstood - that has locked the treasured stories away in a castle guarded by a fire -breathing dragon with a penchant for taking naps when a certain song is sung. Eventually, thc main a _ = _' w . :i•k' •- -. characters are able to save the stories and Mother Goose marries the wizard to the delight of the little ones in the crowd, including Kindergarten to Grade 5 Clinton Public school students. "My students loved having the little ones there," says Brennan. noting the children were incredibly well behaved. ' She adds having children from the Ontario Early Years program in attendance made presenting the literary yarn all the more fun since the play's theme meshed with the centre's focus on the importance of literacy. "We thought it would be wonderful to work together," she says. She notes the play, which is marked as an exam for the class, gives students the chance to exercise their creative juices. She adds student Chris Hofsele filled in as the dragon, in addition to two other roles, when one student couldn't make it. Carrie Turner, of the Goderich-based Ontario Early Years centre, says parents and children were invited to Friday's show at St. Anne's as part of the family literacy celebrations, which are designed to encourage families to spend time enjoying literacy -based activities together. Family literacy day was Jan. 27. Huron County makes water quality high priority but can't afford local initiatives By mer Hubbard Special to The Huron JExpositor County council has agreed to make water quality a high- priority issue in the years to come, but stress they can't afford to foot the bill for local initiatives. "I'm very much in favour of creating a committee because water quality is a very high priority, but I'm not sure we should be stepping up to the front of this," Rob Morley (South Huron) said at council's Jan. 8 meeting. "We need to be active, but we can't afford to always he at the forefront because this is an issue that can go on forever." The idea of a county -wide water quality committee was suggested following a Nov. 28 meeting of health unit representatives, cottage associations, farm groups, members of the tourist industry, environmentalists and municipal leaders. Originally planned as a session to update stakeholders on how the health unit's water quality sampling process had been undertaken over thc summer, recent national headlines calling take Huron a polluted mess sparked renewed interest in the November meeting. County planning and development director Scott Tousaw told council last week they have three options when it comes to the county's water quality situation. "Council could decide to do nothing, establish a steering committee and not resource it, or establish a committee, resource it and pursue water quality programs for the county," he said. Tousaw said he would continue to work on determining the budget implications of creating thc resourced and unresourced steering committees. Numerous councillors stressed the importance of getting the '-Ontario government - Ministry of thc Environment (MOE) - involvcd in the' process. "Wc should have the MOE there first because they have the funding available," Morley said. "They need to he with us at every step all the way through this." "City people should also be covering some of these costs. Wc can't he expected to he the breadbasket of thc province and pay for it all," said Deb Shewfelt (Goderich). "This is just step one because we want millions and the province is the one who should he supporting it." Shewfelt pointed to a recent article in the Toronto Star, which "portrays Huron County as a pretty dirty spot," as a reason to act on the water quality issue immediately. "The MPPs have been meeting in Toronto and Carol Mitchell has assured us that Huron County is at the forefront of discussions," he said. "They'll be coming to us shortly and we need to have something for them." Warden Bill Dowson (Bluewatcr) said he felt it would he necessary to take a lead role in thc project to get it started. "Then we can hack out and let the MOE take over," he said. Council passed a motion to undertake a lead role in thc comprehensive and coordinated effort regarding water issues in Huron County. "People in the county pulled together for the first time (at the Nov. 28 meeting). Nobody was really pointing fingers and we all got along," Dave i-lrlin (South Huron) commented. "We recognized that we were all part of the problem and we all needed to he part of the solution as well."
