Huron Expositor, 2004-01-28, Page 7News St. Columban musicians release debut CD By Sora Campbell Expositor Staff Two musical St. Columban natives are set to release their debut album at the end of January with their Celtic rock band Steerage. Dave and Sharon Kelly, a brother and sister team and members of the Kitchener - Waterloo - based band Steerage, will be hosting their CD release party on Jan. 30 at Bentley's in Stratford. "People have been asking when we would be releasing a CD, so we give the people what they want," said Dave, manager and guitar player for Steerage. "Our friends and family are pretty excited but no one has actually heard it yet. We're waiting for the CD release party." The CD • entitled Overboard comes from the band's name Steerage which is a section of a ship where "all the really good parties take place," said Dave. Overboard features such songs as "The Night that Paddy Murphy Died," "Whiskey in the Jar" and "Drunken Sailor." "We take traditional Celtic music and mix them with a rock style so they're fun just like the way we play," said Dave, a sports and entertainment company manager. October and spent 100 hours in the recording studio. The six member band includes a fiddler, drummer, bass player and second guitarist. Sharon, an actress and teacher in Cambridge, is a step dancer and singer for the band. "She enjoys keeping the crowd's attention by constantly moving and adding costumes and themes. She's a very dramatic person and is always looking for new digs," he said. Dave added that Steerage recently marked their second year together and played their 60th gig. "We've been working really hard and have come a long way for a band with members that all have other full time jobs," he said. The band has already gigs booked through to July, including a regular monthly performances at Bentley's in Stratford as well as other Celtic bars, private parties and the Listowel Paddy Fest in March, said Dave. "Celtic bars are the in thing right now," he said. "Our shows appeal to all ages and the more people that see us, the more people want us to play." But, Dave said he looks forward most to performing at his and Sharon's hometown. On March 6, Steerage will entertain at the St. Paddy's Day Warmup Party at the Seaforth Community Centre and on March 19 they will perform at Hurley's Celtic Inn. , It's always nice to come home but our family and friends usually come to see us play. And, we seem to have a fan club because the crowds really enjoy us and many people keep coming back," he said. "As long as we're having fun the crowd's having fun oo.
