WATCH FOR OUR GRAND OPENING
students at St. Columban
School will have an outdoor
fitness centre installed this
spring.
"All the plans are laid out
and as soon as the ground is
thawed, we'll get digging and
install the equipment," said
Blaine Myers, who has been
organizing the fitness centre
campaign in the St.
Columban and St. Patrick's
(in Dublin) school
communities.
"We have about 80 per cent
of the fundraising complete
but we're getting started no
matter what. It's been a long
haul," he said. "We hope to
start the ground breaking in
April."
Myers said the fundraising
committee for the fitness
centre has raised more than
$17,000 of their $25,000
goal.
"The fitness centre was
actually less expensive than
what we thought. So we do
have enough raised so far but
we are keeping our goal
because there is other things
we could add," he said.
When the junior grades
moved from the school to St.
Patrick's, the equipment
created for younger children
was also moved. Because of
the age f the St. Columban
students Grades 4 to 8), the
commit and students opted
for the Itness centre.
"Th students and staff are
really excited to see that the
fitness centre is on its way
and from the designs it looks
great," said Anne Sutton,
principal of St Columban and
St Patrick's Schools.
"There's been a lot of hard
work done to fundraise for
this equipment and we are
very grateful to the
committee and parents for
making this possible," she
said.
During the committee's
first year of the
campaign,they raised $5,200
through two ball hockey
tournaments and selling
family name signs to go
under the 911 number signs.
Last summer, the schools

Columban school this spring.
received a $500 boost when
they were the winners in the
dragon contest at the 2002
West Perth Cooper Standard
Automotive Dragon Boat
Festival in Mitchell.
Also. the schools have had
sales of Crispy Creme
donuts, Regal, baked goods,
frozen foods and poinsettias.
The committee's project last
year included a letter
campaign to area businesses
and selling commemorative
St. Columban and St.
Patrick's Christmas tree
decorations.
"The students haven't had
playground equipment for
years and even though they
could play sports and that, it
was really quite sad that they
had nothing else," said.
Myers.
"We started fundraising for
the fitness centre. not only
for our own kids but for all
the kids in the school. It's
something that everyone will
appreciate well into the
future."
The approximately 1,750
square foot fitness centre was
designed by Active
Playground Equipment, of
London.
The centre includes
balancing beams, wagon
wheel over head ladder,
curved full disk wall, curved
knotched fire pole climbing
wall, step ring angle climbing
wall, offset double wavy
overhead, offset double D -
ring, shuffle trek and
chinning bar set.
With additional funding,
Sutton said they hope to add
a box -style bench for the
students to sit at during
recess or for teachers to have
an outdoor class activity.
"We're planning to have
other fundraising events in
the summer but wouldn't
have gotten this far now with
out the students, parents,
teachers and members of the
committee who stayed
dedicated," said Myers.
Wild workshop
to educate
on conservation
By Sara Campbell
Expositor Staff
A local volunteer
organization hopes youth
leaders who attend a
upcoming workshop will help
to promote conservation
education.
The Friends of Hullett and
the Canadian Wildlife
Federation will he hosting a
Project Wild workshop on
Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Hullett
Provincial Wildlife Arca,
between Clinton and
Seaforth.
Project Wild is part of
family programs developed by
the Canadian Wildlife
Federation to promote
conservation education. It
provides strategics for
teachers at both elementary
and secondary level to
incorporate concepts, related
to people and thc
environmental, into all areas
of teaching training.
"This program is of interest
to teachers because it is
recognized by thc Ministry of
Education and linked to the
Common Framework of the
Science Learning Outcomes,"
said Sandra Johnstone. who is
co-ordinating the workshop
for the Friends of Hullett.
Johnstone added the
workshop is also of interest to
Scouters, Guiders, other youth
group leaders or any young
adults interested in adding a
fun environmental component
to their programs.
The workshop will be led
by Bert Murphy, of Fort Erie,
lecturer for Brock University's
Faculty of Education.
Formerly thc environmental
education consultant for thc
Niagara South Board of
Education, Murphy has led
Project Wild workshops for
the past 20 years.
"This is the first time this
workshop has been offered
and we have a dozen people
intorestcd so far, from across
southwestern Ontario," said
Johnstone. "But, we can
accommodate well over 20
and the we hope to offer this
workshop again, so the more
interest we have, the better."
Participants will receive a
manual with more than 100
diverse and instructionally
sound educational activities
related to people, wildlife and
thc environment. There is also
educational resource material
and a curriculum cross
reference available.
"Participants are welcomed
to bring their class or youth
group to the Hullett Wildlife
Area afterwards to test their
knowledge. There is no charge
to visit but we ask if the
groups could provide
volunteer work by helping to
clear trails or by cleaning out
blue bird boxes which can be
part of the learning
experience," said Johnstone.
She said that all participants
will receive a certificate of
completion at the end of the
program.
"Certificate earners can use
it in their community at youth
groups, churches, schools
daycares — any place they
come in contact with kids and
encourage conservation
education," said Johnstone.
The six -hour program, from
9 a.m. - 4 p.m., will provide
hands-on indoor and outdoor
activities. The cost of the
workshop is ' $35 and
participants should bring
lunch and outdoor clothes.
To register for the workshop
or for more information
