Lawn
ornaments,
worth $ioo,
stolen
in Seaforth
Lawn ornaments, valued
at $100, were stolen from
the lawn of a Main Street
residence in Seaforth
sometime during the two
weeks before Jan. 5.
Five plastic geese were
taken from the side yard of
the residence, where they
were stacked.
Huron OPP say the owner
has experienced similar
thefts several times in the
past and would like the
ornaments back.
Anyone with related
information is asked to call
the Huron OPP or Crime
Stoppers.

Main Street fire
Seaforth firefighters look up at the windows of a Main Street apartment where a stove fire
occurred Sunday evening at 6;45 p.m. While the young man who lives in the apartment at 55
Main St. put out the blaze himself with a fire extinguisher, he was sent to Seaforth hospital for
smoke inhalation after firefighters arrived at the scene, where they remained for several hours
to clear smoke from the building, said Huron East Fire Chief Marty Bedard.

cannot legally amend the
agreement.
"I am not in agreement to
any amendment to switch the
agreement of the trust. I am
in agreement that we will be
open with ratepayers of the
town of Seaforth and will
divulge anything to the
people of Seaforth that I can
tell without breaking the
law," said Seaforth Coun. Joe
Steffler, new chair of the
trust.
"The only one who can
amend this is the judge and
we'll go there if those guys in
council push us," added
Maloney.
When Seili said that
council can amend a bylaw it
created, Maloney disagreed
saying, "Not this one."
But, both Seili and Steffler
agreed that the issue
shouldn't have to go to court.
"We'd just be wasting each
other's money," said Seili
while Steffler told the trust,
"Nobody wins then but the
lawyers. Surely, we're adult
enough to keep them
(council) happy."
Members of the trust
debated submitting minutes
to council before agreeing to
the idea.
"Technically, we did
nothing wrong. We didn't
have to submit them," said
Sills, referring to the fact that
submitting minutes was not
outlined as a requirement of
the trust agreement.
Maloney said he was
against submitting the
minutes because "there's
nothing in them" since most
of the meetings are held in
camera.
Seili pointed out that every
other board or committee of
council submits minutes to
council and added that
submitting the minutes would
"dot a few i's and cross a few
is to please the doubters.
That's going to please a lot of
them on the street."
Steffler said that if the trust
had been submitting minutes
all along, the community of
Seaforth would have been
better informed about the
positive projects the trust was
funding, like flower pots for

Elliott agreed that the "feel
good things" should go into
the minutes.
But, Sills worried that too
much information may get
into the minutes.
"It's what you put into the
minutes that bothers me. We
should put in the decisions,
not the reasons. The reasons
could be detrimental to every
project. I don't think the
public should be steering us,"
he said.
Steffler said the trust
should agree to submit the
minutes, along with a
quarterly financial statement
to "squash the B.S. out there
on the street."
Seili added those steps
should be taken for "public
harmony and clarity."
Steffler referred to the
agreement by the trust of
council's requests as a
"gentleman's agreement" and
added that he trusted Seili's
word that the draft
amendment would not go to
council for a vote.
"What bothers me," said
Agar, " is it's the people of
Seaforth's money. It's a moot
point sending it to council
because it's what Seaforth
thinks, not council."
But, Seili responded that
the community of Seaforth
began to distrust the Seaforth
trust because the community
asked questions of its
representatives and were
refused an answer.
"This is just an
appeasement to the critics in
town," said Preszcator.
Members of the trust
agreed to hold a public
meeting in early May to let
ratepayers tour the post office
and ask any questions they
have about the trust.
A public meeting for the
trust in early April was
discussed at Huron East
council.
Steffler said the public
meeting should not be held
any sooner to allow the trust's
building for Community Cmt
Access Centre behind the
Seaforth Medical Clinic to be
completed.
"Give us a chance. We
can't do it all in a week," said
Steffler.
