led in prayer. The scripture lesson
was read by Miss Margaret Douglas,

COUNCIL MEETING
The Council met on Tuesday even-
ing for its last regular meeting with
all meinbers present except. Council-
lor Campbell. The minutes of,. the
last meeting were read ,and adopted
on motion of Higgins and Priest.
Fire Chief Bates was •present. and
made a report to the council ion .the
firemen's dance, and stated that the
proceeds over expenses .were '$71
and this amount was handed over to
the, town treasurer for the , pirchase
of coats, boots and caps for the new
fire brigade. The clerk was 'in-
structed to get priceson the coats,
boots and caps 'forthe 'firemen. The
cost to be about $150. ' The fire-
men intend putting on another dance
in about a month to make up the
balance for their new equipment. Mr.
Milton Love was present : and. inter-
viewed • the council as to what help
they would give in pay for his
new. drain on North Richmond St.
Mr. Love stated that the street part
of the drain had cost him, about $90
and considered this was more than
Ire himself, could pay. After some
discussion it was decided, for ,the
council to pay for the tile and in the
meantime the council will look. into
matter and take up any further as-
sistance to Mr. Love at the January
meeting. A number of accounts
were presented, including the salary
of the different town offiMalsand
were ordered to be paid. The clerk
was instructed to prepare a by-law
appointing the officials for the calix-`

The annual business meeting, of
the Cromarty W. M. S. was held at
the home of Mrs. Jas. Scott, on
Thursday, December 9th, the . Presi-
dent, Mrs, ,Scott, •presiding. A good
attendance was present. Mrs. Scott
addressed the meetinggivingsome
very helpful thoughts for the com-
ing year. The secretary, Mrs. Thos.
Scott, gave an account of the meet-
ings during the past year which was
very• encouraging. As our society
has increased in membership and
has had an exceptionally good atten-
dance during the. past year. The

The Community Field Committee
wish to acknowledge with grateful
thanks, a cheque for $90.00 from
the Women'4 Institute, Crediton.
The ladies of the Institute have re-
sponded •most nobly to this worthy
cause, and the payment they have
just made of $90 entirely clears our
Coxnnaunity Field from debt, and
the hearty thanks of not only the
Field Committee but of the whale
Crediton district is due them for
their magnificent support and public
spiritedness.'
The many 'friends of Mrs. E. Get-
tinger will be glad to row that she
has returned home from St. Joseph's
Hospital, London, where she under-
went a serious operation some
time ago.
The Christmas Festival of Zion
Evangelical church will be held on
Christmas night, December 25th. A
musical program of recitations, ex-
ercises, choruses, drills, etc., will in-
troduce the program after which the
cantata, "He Came to us All" will
be rendered.
The sympathy of the community
is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Clinton
Brown in the loss of their only sore:
Wallace Leroy, aged 3 years, 3
months and 21 days, which took
place on Tuesday following an ill-
ness of only a couple of days. The
funeral will be held Thursday after-
noon at 1.30,, interment in the Ex-
eter cemetery:
Last r5unday was missionary Sun-
day in the United church. Mrs.
Mollard, of Exeter, vice-president of
the Huron Presbytery, spoke very
eloquently. on missionary work. The
choir consisted of members of the
W.M.S. On Monday evening a short.
program and `'tea was held in the
United. churci , tea -loon under the
auspices of the W M. S. Lunch
was • served -•cafeteria style. The pro=
gram consisted of a ladies' chorus,
duet by Rev. and Mrs. Hiscocks,
piano solo by Mrs. Alvin Baker and
missionary addresses by Mrs. MoI-
lard, Rev. W. Y. Dreier, and Mr. J.
H. Holtzman.
The regular meeting of the
Women's Institute was held Tuesday
afternoon, December 17th, in the In=
stitute hall, with the president, Mrs.
Zwicker, presiding. The report of
the convention held in London in
November was given by Mrs. G.
N'aynard. The. treasurer . reported
that we had cleared $70 from the
recent bazaar and supper and els()
reported that a cheque for $90 had
been sent to the Field Committee.
This amount clears our Community-
Field
ommunityField of all debt. A social hour
took the form of a Christmas party
which was greatly enjoyed by all.
The hostesses were Mrs. .Orme, Mrs.
Mclsaac and Mrs. H. Young who
served a most delicious lunch.
Next Sunday morning the subject
of discourse at the Evangelical
church will be "Behold the Lamb of
God." 'At the evening service the
pastor will preach on "The Word
was made flesh and we beheld his
GIory." What -is it that keeps some
people out of church? . 1. Others,
2. Influence. 3. Sensitiveness. 4.
Unbelief. 5. Sin. 6. Hatred. 7.
Excuses. 8. Love of the World.
Does God care? Will it matter in
the end? What keeps folks out of
heaven? The same causes. Do all
who causually talk about heaven get
there finally? Think on these things.

The Dorcas Band of the Evangel-
ical'church held a social evening at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert
Fahner. The evening was spent in
contests, musical numbers and read-
ings. The roll was called, each
member responded to a conundrum,
after which a dainty lunch was
served.
Mr. Chas. Zwicker made a busi-
ness trip to Toronto.

Lansing, visited for a few days last.

Mr. Clarence Hoist 'has returned
to his Home at Pigeon, Mich., after
visiting a few days with relatives

Mr. Thomas Keough had the mis-
fortune to fall and crack his chest
bone, but is improving.
Mount Carmel
The death took place at St.
Joseph's Hospital, London, on Thurs-
day, December 9th, of Madeline,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Glavin, due to spinal Meningitis,
aged 2 years and 8 months. She
was in the best of health until three
weeks ago when she took seriously
ill at her home and was removed to
St. Joseph's Hospital, where she re-
ceived the most skilful medical at-
tention, she passed away on above
date. She is survived by her par-
ents, four brothers and two sisters.
Much sympathy is extended to the
bereaved family. The funeral took
place to the R. C. cemetery here on
Saturday at 10 a.m. y
Mr. J oselrh Glavin has purchased
a radio.

held at Goderich last week.
