County supports
baby walkers ban
Baby walkers may soon be
pulled from store shelves in
Huron County and across the
country.
During their Nov. 6 meeting,
Huron County council voted to
support a proposed Health
Canada ban that would prohibit
the sale, import and advertising
of baby walkers in Canada.
"Walkers allow babies
greater mobility, height and
speed that they are not able to
cope with developrpentally,"
said Huron County Health
Unit public health manager
Craig Metzger in his report to
the county's health and
planning committee.
Huron County Health Unit
director Penny Nelligan
presented Metzger's report at
council's Nov. 6 meeting.
Every year 100 Canadian
children are injured in baby
walkers, Metzger said, adding
many parents are still unaware
of the dangers associated with
baby walkers.
"A child in a walker can
move across a room before
parent can react," he
explained. "The increased
height walkers give children
allows them to reach objects
normally out of range —
making hazards such as
handles of pots on stoves,
irons, kettles and poisonous
substances more accessible."
Canada's manufacturers and
large retailers have honoured a
voluntary ban on baby walkers
since 1989.
However, after the
dissolution of the Canadian
Juvenile Manufacturers
Product Association — major
supporters of the ban — baby
walkers began appearing in
Canadian stores.
A recent Canadian study
showed one-third of parents
used walkers because they
believed the walkers would
keep their infants safe.
And while he didn't have
any specific numbers for
Huron County, Metzger said
he knows there are still a fair
number of Ontario parents
using baby walkers.
"The vast majority — 87 per
cent — of parents and
caregivers perceive that
products available in the
market place are safe and we
need to make sure that is the
case," Metzger said.
County officials have sent a
letter of support to Health
Canada regarding the baby
walker ban and Metzger said
he is hoping for an update on
the situation in "the next
month or two."

Three store fronts given facelift
By Sara Campbell
Expositor Staff
Three Main Street
businesses have been given a
facelift to help make
downtown Seaforth more
attractive.
Owners of Tremeer
Commercial Printers and
Office Supply, at 37 Main
Street, and both Tony Arts
Financial Group and Hearts
and Flowers, at 42 Main
Street, have recently
renovated their store fronts.
"I think the renovation is a
positive thing. It really helps
to make the Main Street
more appealing," said
Christine Tremeer, owner of
Tremeer Commercial
Printers.
Tremeer said the facelift
was an initiative by the
Seaforth Masonic Lodge,
who owns the building, as
structural work had to be
done to the historical
building.
She added that the Huron
East Heritage Conservation
Advisory Committee was
consulted prior to work
being done on the building.
"It makes the building look
nicer to the eye and will be
assentive to the other
building along the Main
Street," she said, adding that
she is uncertain of what the
completed look of the
facelift will be.
Tony Arts, owner of the
Tony Arts Financial Group,
building, said the
renovations were a year-long
project.
"I think it was time. It is an
older building and it was
getting to the point where it
needed a new look," he said.
Arts said the project idea
started as a way to have a
direct entrance into each
individual business instead
of sharing one entrance for
both.
From pictures, dating back
to the early 1900s, the
building did have two
separate entrance and that
same design was used when
restoring the store front, he
said.
He added that he had
completed an application and
consulted the Local
Architectural Conservation
Advisory Committee over
two years but later meet
final approval with the new
Huron East Heritage
Conservation Advisory
Committee. By that time, he
said the project turned into a
complete facelift of the
building.
Art did most of the work
on his own, hiring local
people to do electrical and
drywall work, and purchased
all paints and supplies
locally.
"I was really stunned with
the colour of the building at
first. It is a rust orange
colour but it seemed bright.
Now I think it makes the
building stand out," he said.
"I think that just giving a
store front a facelift helps to
make the town look more
attractive."
Daycare donation
Paula Stackhouse, interim director of the Seaforth Cooperative
Children's Centre, accepts a $1,000 cheque from John Bennett,
president of the Seaforth Agricultural Society. The donation will
go towards the daycare's new building fund.
