Huron Expositor, 2003-11-05, Page 181S -TN( ICOM =PO$I7O& Nomisin 1 2004 Sports Seaforth-area resident teaching seniors that `Fitness is Fun' By Sara Campbell Expositor Staff Preventing arthritis and preventing falls are two ways Seaforth-area resident Drusilla Leitch is teaching seniors that "Fitness is Fun." "We are exercising for the game of life not the games at the Olympics," said Leitch who has been a fitness instructor and certified trainer since 1979. The 66-ye4r-old teaches "Fitness is Fun," an aqua fit training program and certification program at the Vanastra Recreation Centre, through the Water Art Fitness program, sponsored by Speedo. Leitch also teaches programs to specialized groups, seniors and people with arthritis and having made videos for arthritis prevention through the Canadian Arthritis Society. "A lot of seniors are believed to be old and fragile, but the people in my class are really strong and tough," she said. "I taught a class at a high school level and they couldn't even keep up with me." Leitch said her students range and age, but many are between the ages of 60 - 70, and have been in the, program since she began teaching. "It's all about people's attitudes, but if you can make it fun and do something different each week, they'll keep coming," she said. In the water, Leitch said there are a lot more balancing activities that can be done and more muscle groups can be targeted. "You are far less likely to have a fall if you have good balance," she said. "If you do fall, you will at least have good muscle tone to prevent serious injury." Sara Campbell photo Drusilla Leitch (top, right and bottom, left) teaches an aqua fit training program and certification program, "Fitness is Fun", at the Vanastra Recreation Centre to specialized groups, seniors and people with arthritis to help them stay active. Leitch said she uses weights, water noodles and special webbed gloves and shoes to help participants keep their balance. She added that she also practices Tai Chi to improve balance and coordination. She said because she has people regularly joining her class, she gives people the choice of moving at their own speed to help prevent any muscle injury. "Speed is not number one here. Just because you can do something quickly does not mean you are doing things correctly," she said. Leitch also teaches her "Fitness is Fun" program in Florida where she spends the winter months but has a staff member at the recreation centre to continue her program. "I'm in the water as much as I am on land," she said. While on land, Leitch teaches "Walk to Fit" at the Seaforth and District Scoreboard HOCKEY Juniors Nov. 1 Kings 10 vs Sharks 9 Kings goals: Nick Flanagan 4, Tyler Primeau 3, Brett Williamson, Danielle Chisholm, Keegan Melady.
