Pettapiece returns to Hurricanes
By Clint Hoggart
Vinton News -Record
There's a familiar face
around the Huron Hurricanes
camp with the addition of
Julia Pettapiece as head
coach.
Pettapiece returned to
coaching duties in September
after taking a year off to have
a baby.
The mother of four said
she first coached the
Hurricanes from 1998 to
2001 and volunteered for the
2001/02 season.
After coaching the
Tillsonburg Aquatic
Torpedoes for three years,
Pettapiece moved to Huron
County in 1996.
Pettapiece swam
competitively in Stratford at
high school and at the
YMCA.
The Hurricanes have about
20 members, said Pettapiece,
adding new children sign up
every day. The coach said the
Hurricanes are recruiting and
hope to have 35-40
swimmers. "We hope to build
the team up."
The coach hopes to
become more active in the
county. She added she wants

to take swimmers of different
skill levels to a variety of
events.
"Competitive swimming is
a fantastic sport,' said
Pettapiece, adding her motto
is, "Swim fast, swim well
and swim consistently while
having fun."
Swimming is one of the
sports in which athletes use
all of their muscles, said
Pettapiece, adding it works
all three energy systems,
aerobic, anaerobic lactic and
anaerobic alactic.
While swimmers compete
individually, the coach said it
is a team sport. "The whole
team is like a family." When
her four-year-old daughter
completed her first race,
Pettapiece said the whole
pool, not just her team, were
cheering her along even
though she didn't finish first.
Jeff Walraven, president of
the Hurricanes, said
Pettapiece ran the I Can
Swim program for 45 to 50
children at a campground
outside Grand Bend. He is
ecstatic to have Pettapiece
back.
The president said
Pettapiece is a down-to-earth
and wonderful person who
Coach Julia Pettapiece
leads by example. "She
practises what she preaches."
He added her capability far
exceeds the Hurricanes'
requirements.
Pettapiece has her Level 3
Theory coaching certificate
and is working towards her
Level 3 technical certificate
for swimming.
